Nashville, Tenn. - Bowling Green withstood a two and one-half hour rain delay and plated two runs with two outs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat Belmont University at Greer Stadium late on Tuesday night, 10-9.
After the first two Falcons grounded out in the 10th inning, Len Elias walked, Kelly Hunt singled to left and Nick Elrod walked to load the bases. Corey Loomis then singled to center field, scoring Elias and Hunt, breaking the 8-8 tie. Andy Hudak flew out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 10th, Matt Hundley entered in relief of Tom Oestrike and retired the first two Bruins he faced, via a ground out and strikeout. Belmont's Dan Soukup then homered to bring the home team to within one run, 10-9. After another Bruin walked, Neil Schmitz entered and walked another Bruin to put runners on first and second. But, Schmitz got Josh Brummett to fly out and picked up his first collegiate save in the 10-9 BGSU win.
Oestrike recorded his first collegiate victory, pitching two and one-third innings, giving up two hits, no runs and walking just one while striking out two.
BGSU (4-7 overall) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings thanks to a run in the second, a run in the third and three runs in the fourth. RBI-singles by Tim Newell and Jimmy Lipari, along with Loomis scoring on a wild pitch, accounted for the three runsin the fourth frame.
After Belmont (8-6 overall) plated three in the sixth and five in the seventh inning, BGSU needed a two-run rally in the eighth to send the game to extra innings. Jeff Warnock and Lipari began the eighth inning with back-to-back singles. David Barkholz hit into a fielder's choice, which retired Warnock at third and kept Falcon runners on first and second with one out. Then, Tim Newell doubled to right field to score both Lipari and Barkholz and tie the score at 8-8.
Newell finished the game 3-for-6 with three RBIs, as did Loomis.
BGSU now sits on a two-game winning streak with an off-day on Wednesday. The Falcons return to action with one game at Tennessee Tech on Thursday, March 14, at 4 p.m. BGSU ends its spring break trip this weekend with a three-game series at Western Kentucky (March 15-17).
