Ann Arbor, Mich. - The University of Michigan gained the lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth and went on to post a 4-3 win over visiting Bowling Green on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Ray Fischer Stadium.
BG took the lead in the top of the second inning when second baseman Corey Loomis led off with a double to right field. He moved to third on a groundout by Nate Henschen and scored off of a Jimmy Lipari sacrifice fly to right field for a 1-0 Falcon lead.
The Wolverines tied the game in the bottom of the inning after a solo homer by Brandon Roberts off of Falcon pitcher Burke Badenhop. It was Badenhop's first collegiate start and the round-tripper to Roberts was his only mistake. Badenhop pitched five strong innings, scattering five hits, allowing two runs on three walks and two strikeouts.
Bowling Green regained the lead in the fourth when lead-off hitter David Barkholz laid down a bunt for a base hit. The centerfielder then stole second and third base before coming home on a wild pitch by starter Tim Leveque for a 2-1 BG lead.
UM again tied the game in the fifth inning. But, the Falcons took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth when Nick Elrod led off with a double to right-centerfield, moved to third on a Henschen groundout and scored on a fielding error by the UM third baseman.
However, in the bottom half of the inning, Gino Lollio hit a two-out, two-run homer off of reliever Ryan Lindquist to give the home team a 4-3 lead. BG failed to plate the tying run in the top of the ninth.
Lindquist pitched the final two innings of the game for BG, surrendering two runs on three hits. Barkholz finished 3-for-5 with a run scored while Loomis was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
BG (6-10 overall) is scheduled to have its home opener of 2002 next Tuesday, March 26, at Warren Steller Field against IPFW at 3 p.m.
