BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team began a six-match homestand in style Saturday (March 23), with a pair of dual-match victories. The Falcons downed Duquesne University, 5-1, before blanking Bradley University by a 7-0 score.
The wins bring BGSU's record to 11-8 in dual-match play this season.
In the opening match, the Falcons and Dukes did not compete in doubles play. BGSU captured five of the singles matches, with the only DU win coming at the top flight. The Dukes' David Brady downed senior Vitek Wild at that level. Other than that match, it was all Falcons.
Junior Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo posted a straight-sets win at the second flight, downing Seth Fogelman by a 6-1, 6-4 score. Lopez-Acevedo dropped only five games in his win, but the other four BGSU victors lost a combined total of only six games.
Senior Ed Kuresman won at the fifth level by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores, while classmate Mike Kossoff lost only one game at the third flight. Freshman Ian Bliss won by 6-1, 6-1 results at the fourth flight, while junior Peter Gardonyi lost only four games at the sixth level.
Against Bradley, the Falcons started with three doubles victories. The team of Lopez-Acevedo and Wild improved to 4-1 on the year, and 3-0 at the top flight, with an 8-6 win. At the second level, Kossoff and Kuresman teamed up for the first time this season, and recorded an 8-3 victory. Junior Geoff Hiscox returned to action for the first time since suffering an injury on March 12, and combined with sophomore Joel Carney for an 8-5 win at the third level.
In singles play, Wild returned to form with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Marijon Panzic at the top flight, while Carney did not lose a game at the third level. Lopez-Acevedo and Bliss won in straight sets at the second and sixth flights, respectively.
Gardonyi and BU's Bret Martin split their first two sets at the fourth flight, with both ending 7-5, before the BGSU junior ran away with a 6-1 win in the third set. Kossoff also rallied after falling in the second set to record a three-set win at the fifth level.
"I am very proud that we were able to come out and compete as well as we did," said BGSU head coach Jay Harris. "Besides Vitek's little hiccup, we dominated a very good Duquesne team. Then, we beat a solid Bradley team at every flight.
"It just shows how much heart and guts these guys have. Everything that has happened this week has brought us closer together as a group. The situation has just made us stronger. In a way, it will make it even tougher to beat us the rest of the year."
The Falcons will continue the six-match homestand with a home match vs. DePaul next Saturday (March 30). That contest is scheduled to begin at noon at Keefe Courts.
