Ypsilanti, Mich. - In a game that saw 30-40 m.p.h. winds result in eight home runs, it was fitting that Saturday's game one of a doubleheader was decided by a grand-slam home run. Unfortunately, for visiting Bowling Green it was Eastern Michigan's Derrick Peterson that smacked the game-winning homer in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 13-10 EMU victory at Oestrike Stadium. The game was a seven-inning contest and the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams.
BGSU rebounded from a 3-0 deficit with six runs in the top of the third inning after sending 11 batters to the plate. Sophomore Nate Henschen smacked Bowling Green's first homer of the game with a two-run home run, scoring Andy Hudak who had reached on a single. Then freshman Jeff Warnock followed with a bunt single down the third base line. After Tim Newell was hit by a pitch one out later, Kelly Hunt singled home Warnock to tie the score, 3-3. Second baseman Corey Loomis then sent his fifth home run of the season over the right-field wall giving the Falcons a three-run lead and six total runs in the frame, 6-3.
The Eagles came within one run with two scores in the bottom of the third inning and then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a three-run homer by Brian Bixler, 8-6.
BGSU fought back with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, beginning with an RBI-single from Loomis, scoring Newell, and followed by a two-run blast to right-centerfield by shortstop Nick Elrod to give the Falcons a 9-8 lead. The Brown and Orange added another run in the top of the seventh off of an Andy Hudak solo blast for a 10-8 advantage heading into the last half of the inning.
After Ben Jones led off with a pinch-hit single, freshman Matt Hundley relieved Ryan Lindquist on the mound and promptly struckout the first batter he faced. However, a wild pitch moved Jones to second and a double to left field scored him, bringing the Eagles to within one. A walk and then an intentional walk loaded the bases for Derrick Peterson's game-winning grand slam.
Hundley suffered his first loss of the season (0-1). Starter Kyle Knoblauch surrendered eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits (three homers), one walk and two strikeouts. Loomis finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs. The Falcons left five men stranded in the loss.
