Detroit, Mich. - Bowling Green scored six runs over the final three innings to pull ahead of host Detroit on Wednesday afternoon, going on to register a 9-1 victory. BGSU out-hit the Titans 14-4 and had no errors compared to UDM's four.
The Falcons jumped out to the lead in the first inning when Tim Newell hit a one-out double to left field. After a Nick Elrod walk, first baseman Kelly Hunt singled home Newell for a 1-0 BGSU lead.
Detroit threatened in the bottom of the first inning with runners on second and third with two outs. But Falcon starter Tom Oestrike got Roger Wechter to pop out to second base to end the inning with no runs.
Both teams were held in check over the next two innings before BGSU added a run in the fourth inning. Hunt received a one-out walk and moved to second on a bunt single by Corey Loomis down the third-base line. Len Elias grounded into what looked like was going to be a double play, retiring Loomis at second base. However, the relay throw by second baseman Brian Wilson to first base sailed to the fence, allowing Hunt to trot home for the second run of the game for the Brown and Orange, 2-0.
In the sixth, Hunt led off with a single to left field, Elias hit a one-out double to right field, and Andy Hudak singled down the left-field line to score Hunt for a 3-0 advantage. Another run came BGSU's way in the seventh inning when Jeff Warnock scored from third base on a wild pitch.
Detroit finally broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a run off of Falcon reliever Brad Henry, cutting BGSU's lead to 4-1. But, the Falcons didn't allow UDM to get any closer as they scored two runs in the eighth inning off of a Andy Hudak two-run home run, his fifth of the season.
Three more runs crossed for Bowling Green in the ninth inning via a one-run single by Elrod and a two-run single by Elias.
Oestrike improved his record to 2-1 by allowing just three hits and one walk over six full innings, while striking out two Titans. Keith Williams and Neil Schmitz didn't allow a run over the final two innings of the game.
Loomis extended his hitting streak to 14 games with his bunt single in the fourth inning. Hudak led the hit parade by finishing 3-for-4 and one walk while Schmitz, Newell, Hunt and Elias each had two hits each.
BGSU (12-15 overall, 4-4 MAC) travels to Buffalo this weekend for a four-game MAC series (April 12-14).
