Falcons On Five-Game Win Streak
BGSU defeated Defiance on April 16, 18-3, and then swept a four-game series vs. Marshall University over the weekend for its longest winning streak of the season (five games). The Falcons batted .379 with 11 doubles, 12 homers and 58 runs scored during the five-game stretch. Meanwhile, the BGSU pitching staff had a 4.19 ERA, allowed just 20 earned runs and held the opponent batting averages to .290.
BGSU to Play Toledo at Fifth Third Field
Bowling Green will play the University of Toledo in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 27, at Fifth Third Field, home of the Toledo Mud Hens. The game is being billed as the Northwest Ohio Collegiate Baseball Classic and is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children under 12, and can be purchased through the UT ticket office.
Kelly In the Hunt
JR Kelly Hunt drove in 17 runs and smacked four home runs last week in five games to raise his season totals to 52 RBIs and 12 homers. With 17 regular season games left, Hunt is within striking distance of the single-season records at BGSU set last year by Lee Morrison (63 RBIs and 16 home runs).
Elias Is Topping the Charts
SR outfielder Len Elias became the BGSU career leader in a third category over the weekend vs. Marshall. Elias is the all-time leader in total bases (363), runs scored (184) and doubles (52) at BGSU. He is second in hits (225) and at-bats (635), third in RBIs (145), fifth in walks (105) and sixth in home runs (26).
Also Among the Chart Toppers
SR shortstop Nick Elrod is just six assists away from passing Brian Koelling on BGSU's all-time assists list. Elrod has 503 assists in his career, including a team-leading 85 this season at shortstop. Elrod is also fifth in games played (196), tied for fourth in doubles (38) and fifth in runs scored (138).
Firsts for Two Falcons
Freshmen Jesse Sobol and Jayson Selgo recorded their first collegiate hits on April 16 in an 18-3 BGSU victory over visiting Defiance. Sobol, in his first career at-bat, roped a single down the right-field line which brought in a run. Selgo did one better by making his first hit as a Falcon a solo home run over the left-field wall, doing so in his seventh career at-bat.
Head Coach Danny Schmitz
Danny Schmitz (Eastern Michigan '79) is in his 12th season as head coach of the Falcons. He recorded his 300th collegiate coaching victory on Feb. 17, 2002, at Tennessee with BGSU's 15-11 decision. His overall record is 316-291-4 (.520 pct.) overall and at BGSU. Bowling Green's MAC record with Schmitz as coach is 169-160-1 (.514 pct.) while the Falcons have won three MAC East Division Championships, two MAC Tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Regional twice during his tenure.
Walk This Way
SR Nick Elrod leads the Falcons with 24 walks this season while Len Elias is second with 23. The two are fourth and seventh among MAC batters in walks. Elias has led the Falcons the last two years in free passes with 26 in 2001 and 38 in 2000. For his career, Elias has walked 105 times in 635 at-bats, while striking out just 75 times. Elrod led the Falcons in 1999 with 35 walks.
