Falcons Split Twinbill Against Ohio

Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green won the first game of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader on Saturday against visiting Ohio University, 14-5, but dropped the nightcap, 6-3, at Warren Steller Field.
In game one, the Falcons scored a combined 12 runs in the third and fourth innings to overcome an early 4-0 OU lead after two innings. OU scored a run in the first inning off of a Mike Arbinger solo home run to right-center field. The Bobcats added to the lead in the second inning with an RBI-single by Tony Gandee, RBI-double by Dan Lunsford and RBI-single from Jason Shockey for a 4-0 OU lead.
The Falcons broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI-single from Andy Hudak, scoring Len Elias from second base, cutting the visitors' lead to 4-1.
BG pulled ahead with seven runs in the third inning using five hits and sending 11 batters to the plate. Kelly Hunt brought home Neil Schmitz with a bases-loaded single. Then Corey Loomis walked to bring home Tim Newell and cutting the Bobcat lead to 4-3. Elias gave the Falcons the lead, 5-4, for good with a bases-loaded double to left field, scoring two runs. Hudak then followed with a two-run double down the right-field line for a 7-4 BG advantage. After Kevin Longstreth moved Hudak to third on a sacrifice bunt, Jeff Warnock grounded out to bring home Hudak, wrapping up the Falcon scoring for the inning.
Five more runs crossed for Bowling Green in the fourth inning, beginning with an RBI-single by Hunt. Loomis followed with a two-run homer to left field, upping the Falcon lead to 11-4. Elias then walked and scored from first base on a Hudak double. Hudak scored later in the inning when Warnock grounded into a double play, giving BG a 13-4 lead after four innings.
Newell scored the final BG run in the fifth inning on an infield single by Hudak and Ohio added a run in the sixth off of a Lunsford RBI-single.
BG's Kyle Knoblauch (2-1) pitched the entire seven-inning game, allowing 12 hits but only five runs on no walks and three strikeouts. Chris Bova (1-1) suffered the loss for Ohio, giving up eight runs and three walks with one strikeout.
In game two, Ohio again jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning. But the Bobcats held on to split the Mid-American Conference doubleheader at Bowling Green with a 6-3 win in the night cap.
Adam Fox hit a two-run single off of BG starter Tyler Saneholtz in the first inning for the 2-0 lead. Then Mike Arbinger hit an RBI-single and scored later off of a Fox double to extend its lead to 4-0 over the Falcons.
BG cut into the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Nate Henschen scored off of a single by Tim Newell.
Neither team threatened again until the bottom of the sixth when Nick Elrod reached on a fielding error by shortstop Omari Briscoe. Back-to-back singles by Kelly Hunt and Corey Loomis loaded the bases for Len Elias. The outfielder grounded into a double play, but scored Elrod cutting the Ohio lead to 4-2.
However, Ohio added a run in the seventh and eighth innings to push the lead back to 6-2. Newell scored BG's final run in the bottom of the eighth off of a single by Elias to left field, but the Falcons left the bases loaded to end the inning.
OU's Marc Cornell (2-3) earned the win in seven innings of work while Dan O'Rourke picked the save. Freshman Tyler Saneholtz (1-1) picked his first loss in a BG uniform, lasting six and one-third innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, three walks and four strikeouts.
BG (10-14 overall, 3-4 MAC) wraps up its four-game series with Ohio on Sunday, April 7, with a nine-inning game beginning at 1 p.m. at Warren Steller Field.
