NOTRE DAME, Ind. - A pair of Bowling Green State University student-athletes have been named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District IV University Division Softball Team. Senior Jessie Milosek (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) was named to the first team, while classmate Holly Frantz (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Otsego) earned second-team honors.
Both Milosek and Frantz have been named to prior academic all-district teams. Milosek is recognized for the third consecutive year, having earned second-team honors in both 2000 and 2001. Frantz was named to the first team last spring.
The district team, announced Thursday (May 9), is made up of student-athletes from NCAA Division I schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
To qualify, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or important reserve on the team, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
Milosek led the 2002 Falcons in wins and earned-run average, compiling an 8-7 record and a 2.50 ERA. She also paced the team in games started (15), complete games (11) and strikeouts (56). Milosek combined with Andrea Genter on a no-hitter in the season opener at Tennessee State.
Milosek ranks among the BGSU career leaders in every pitching category. She is fifth in school history in strikeouts (184), and is also on the lists for appearances (75, seventh), games started (50, 10th), innings pitched (345, ninth), wins (28, ninth), shutouts (nine, T-fifth), ERA (2.05, eighth) and saves (five, fourth).
Milosek, as a district first-team pick, now will have her name placed on the Academic All-America ballot. She maintains a 3.85 cumulative grade point average as a human movement science major.
Frantz ended her senior campaign with a .285 batting average. The lone Falcon to start all 48 games, she was third on the team with 23 runs batted in, and had a team-best fielding percentage of .987. Frantz, who connected for a long homerun in her final collegiate game, Sunday's (May 5) 9-5 win at Ohio, had her first two career round-trippers this season.
Frantz had at least one hit in 12 of the season's final 14 games. After totalling eight runs and eight RBI in her first 34 games of the season, Frantz scored 13 runs and drove in 15 in those final 14 contests. She set a school record for career fielding pct. (.989), making just seven career errors in over 600 chances.
Frantz is one of just 13 female student-athletes nationwide to receive an NCAA Women's Enhancement Program Postgraduate Scholarship. She currently maintains a 3.87 cumulative GPA as a sport management major.
The Falcons of fourth-year head coach Leigh Ross-Shaw ended the season with an overall record of 22-25-1 and a MAC slate of 11-13. BGSU tied for third in the East Division. The Brown and Orange will move to the West Division for the 2002-03 campaign.
