BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Association has named the 2001-02 All-Academic Teams, and the Bowling Green State University squad is on the national list. The Falcons of head coach Cami Wells have qualified as an Academic All-American Cross Country Team with Distinction.
With a team grade point average of 3.29, BGSU tied for 61st among all NCAA Division I institutions. A total of 103 institutions had a team GPA of 3.00 or better to earn the Academic All-American Team honor.
Schools with a team GPA of 3.25 or higher earn the "with distinction" honor.
"The young ladies on the team work very hard in the classroom," said Wells. "I couldn't be happier that they have earned this academic honor."
BGSU's cumulative team GPA, which was at 3.29 when the nominations were made, has risen to 3.35 through the spring semester. A pair of Falcon student-athletes, seniors Katrina Kerns and Christy Paine, each maintain a perfect 4.00 GPA, while nine other returnees to the 2002 squad have a cumulative GPA of better than 3.00.
The BGSU men, coached by Sterling Martin in 2001-02, also were named an All-Academic Team. The men's team honor came from the United States Cross Country Coaches Association. BGSU's cumulative GPA was at 3.23 at the time of the honor.
To qualify as an "All-Academic Cross Country Team," a school must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher as a team.
The Falcon men just missed being named an All-Academic Team, With Distinction," falling just shy of the 3.25 minimum for that category.
A total of 25 men's teams were given the "with distinction" honor, and BGSU's GPA placed the Falcons 26th in the nation.
The Falcon men's and women's cross country squads will open the 2002 season with an Aug. 31 meet at Eastern Michigan. BGSU's lone home meet, the Mel Brodt Invitational, is scheduled for Sept. 14.
