EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team enjoyed a successful first day at the Spartan Cup on Friday (Oct. 10), as no fewer than seven of the eight Falcon competitors opened singles play with victories. The three-day, five-team event, hosted by Michigan State, is being held at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
Ball State, Cincinnati and Toledo are participating in the tourney, along with BGSU and host MSU.
Each of the Falcons' two freshmen, Ashley Jakupcin and Erica Wolfe, went 2-0 in Friday singles play. At the 'A' Flight, Jakupcin posted wins over Ball State's Jenny Batty and Toledo's Myriam Cueva, and will face MSU's Caroline Lay in the semifinal round Saturday. Wolfe downed MSU's Marissa Macholz and UT's Daniella Moran, both in straight sets, to advance to the semifinals of the 'B' Flight. Wolfe will meet BSU's Susan Kelley on Saturday.
Sophomore Susie Schoenberger and senior Gaby Coello each went 1-1 at the 'A' Flight. Schoenberger downed UC's Samantha Liu before losing to BSU's Jill Wieman in a third-set tiebreaker. Coello topped MSU's Shelley Brady in straight sets before losing to BSU's Melissa Roach.
In 'B' Flight action, sophomore Andrea Meister lost only one game in a straight-sets win over UT's Claire Smalley, before losing a second-round match to Kelley. Junior Laura Kokinda did Meister one better, beating UT's Betsy Hoffman without losing a single game. Kokinda fell to MSU's Kate Thomas in the second round.
Also at the 'B' Flight, junior Lindsey Mix topped BSU's Beth Campus (6-0, 6-3) before losing to UC's Jill Klauck. Junior Cameron Benjamin topped UT's Jen Meister (6-0, 6-1) after drawing a first-round bye. Sophomore Heidi Romer lost her match to MSU's Karen Gustafson.
