BGSU Drops 6-3 Decision to Northern Michigan

Marquette, Mich. - Bowling Green's attempt to come back from a 4-0 deficit fell short Saturday night against Northern Michigan, as the Falcons dropped a 6-3 decision. NMU jumped out early, scoring four goals in just over the first 10 minutes of the game.
NMU netted goals on its first three shots of the game to take a 3-0 lead on the Falcons. The first shot and score came from the stick of sophomore Dirk Southern off of a rebound in front of the net at just 1:48 into the game. Pat Bateman then scored a power-play goal at 6:48 on a fastbreak to build the NMU lead to 2-0, followed by a Darin Oliver goal at 10:53. The final Wildcat goal of the first period came from Dusty Collins at 11:52 for a quick 4-0 lead.
BGSU finally cut into its big deficit at 12:39 when senior Kevin Bieksa knocked in his own rebound from the top of the crease. Sophomore Ryan Barnett and Ryan Minnabarriet each got assists.
The Falcons came out flying in the second period and cut the NMU lead to two when sophomore Don Morrison took a slapshot from the top of the left circle that found its way past Craig Kowalski just :44 seconds into the period. The goal was unassisted. Then, less than seven minutes later freshman Rich Meloche knocked in the rebound from a Mark Wires shot attempt out of the air into the back of the net to cut the Falcon deficit to one, 4-3, at 7:46. Senior Brian Escobedo also picked up an assist on the goal.
NMU built its lead back to two goals , 5-3, when yet another odd-man rush for the Wildcats resulted in a goal by Kevin Gardner at 14:13. The Wildcats added a power-play goal at 19:41 of the third period for the final 6-3 verdict.
BGSU held a 41-21 shot advantage for the game, including 19-6 in the first period. NMU was 2-for-4 on the power play while BGSU was 0-for-3 with the extra man.
BGSU (1-1-0 overall, 1-1-0 CCHA) will take to the road for a Central Collegiate Hockey Association contest at Notre Dame on Friday, Oct. 17, at 7:35 p.m. The two teams will then meet in the Falcons home-opener on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the BGSU Ice Arena. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
