BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team used a balanced attack to push the Akron Zips to a fifth and decisive set, only to come up short Wednesday night at Anderson Arena (30-22, 30-32, 30-21, 29-31, 14-16). Sophomore Emily Manser led a host of Falcons to reach double-digit kills with 17 kills of her own.
BGSU trailed early in game one, 7-10 after back-to-back Akron kills. The Falcons claimed their first lead of the match at 17-16 after a 10-6 run, capped off by a service ace by junior Melissa Mohr, forcing an Akron timeout. The timeout did not slow down the Bowling Green onslaught, finishing game one on a 13-6 run, capturing game one 30-22.
The Zips got out to an early 11-5 lead to start game two. BGSU put together an 11-6 run to gain their first lead at 16-15, following two straight Akron ball handling errors. The Falcons stretched their lead to 23-20 with kills by Manser and Mohr to force a UA timeout. Akron put together a 12-7 run following the timeout to capture game two 32-30.
Much like games one and two, BGSU struggled to get out of the gates, falling behind 9-15, committing several errors. The Brown & Orange mounted a massive run of 21-6, led by several key kills by Manser, Twite and senior Samantha Rennau. Those three combined for nine kills in that run, to take a 2-1 advantage in the match and a 30-21 game three victory.
The Falcons let game four slip away, after gaining an impressive 20-12 advantage. The Zips compiled an 11-4 run to get within one at 24-23, before Bowling Green settled down, earning five of the next nine points to take a 29-27 lead, forcing a Zip timeout. Akron came out of the stoppage with an unanswered 4-0 run, claiming game four 31-29.
Late in game five, Bowling Green led 10-8 following a Manser kill. The two teams exchanged points with the Falcons still leading 13-12, before Akron rallied with a 4-1 run to claim game five, 16-14.
For the match, four Falcons registered double-digit kills. Twite had a team-high 20 followed by Rennau at 19, Manser with 17 and Mohr with 11.
Susie Norris added 27 digs, which gives her 60 digs in her last two matches after posting 33 versus Ball State last Saturday.
The Falcons return to action on Friday night, when they travel to Western Michigan, Friday night and Northern Illinois the following night to conclude the 2003 regular season. Both matches are set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
