BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University cross country head coach Cami Wells has announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Sisters Caroline Hillman and Stephanie Hillman (Westerville, Ohio) and Jamie Roflow (Cincinnati, Ohio) will join the Falcon women's cross country and track and field programs for the 2004-05 academic year.
"The addition of these three young women really solidifies our team for next fall," said Wells. "They all have the capability to step in and be scorers for us right away. In addition, all three have outstanding academic records and will be excellent representatives of Falcon athletics."
Caroline Hillman currently attends Westerville South High School, where she earned All-State honors earlier this month. Competing for coaches Scott Dorne and Meghann Ongaro, she has posted a personal-best time of 18:28 in the 5,000 meters. Hillman capped off her senior year with a 23rd-place finish at the state meet. The daughter of Colby and Ann Hillman, she plans to major in exercise science at BGSU.
"Caroline is one of the top Division-I runners in the state of Ohio," said Wells. "She is an all-state cross country runner, and has proven herself as a track runner as well, running the 3,200 meters in 11:28. Caroline, a member of the National Honor Society, has run some impressive times over the past three years, and she has high aspirations for her collegiate career. Her aggressiveness and drive make her a very tough competitor, and she will be a big asset to the team as we strive to climb up the conference ranks."
Stephanie Hillman, like her sister, currently attends Westerville South H.S. She has posted personal-best times of 18:53 in the 5K and 11:50 in the 3,200-meter event while competing for coaches Dorne and Ongaro. Also a member of the National Honor Society, she plans to major in education at BGSU.
"Stephanie is new to the sport of cross country, having only competed the past two years," said Wells. "But, she has made great strides already and looks to continue her success next fall. Prior to joining the WSHS cross country team in 2002, Stephanie was a high-level gymnast. Her gymnastics background has served her well, as she is a very strong athlete. I look for her to be a strong addition to our team next year. Stephanie, like her sister Caroline, is an excellent student. Stephanie has really pushed herself and made the transition from gymnastics to distance running with ease. She is a great competitor who has set some lofty goals for herself, and she would be an asset to any team."
Roflow, a senior at Archbishop McNicholas High School, has been named the GGCL Runner of the Year in each of the last three seasons, and has earned all-state honors in each of those years. This season, she was the top Division-II senior at the state cross country meet, placing fourth overall. Roflow, competing for coaches Dan Rosenbaum and Bill Valenzano, has recorded personal-best times of 5:10 in the 1,600 meters, 11:27 in the 3,200 meters and 18:44 in the 5K.
Roflow, who finished fourth in this year's state meet after two consecutive eighth-place state finishes, was selected to represent the state of Ohio in the Mid-East Cross Country Championships this Saturday (Nov. 15) in Kettering, Ohio. The meet includes the top-10 senior female cross country runners from the states of Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In the classroom, she is a member of both the National Honor Society and the Spanish NHS, and has earned Academic All-Ohio honors. The daughter of Mark and Cindy Roflow, she plans to major in business at BGSU.
"Jamie started running cross country her sophomore year in high school, and has been one of the best runners in the state ever since," said Wells. "She is also very competitive in track. I was impressed with Jamie from the first time I met her, and I am thrilled to have her joining the team. She is exactly what we look for in a student-athlete. She has an excellent academic record and is a fierce competitor. Jamie has the capability to step in next fall and make an immediate impact. She has the drive and desire necessary to be a major contender in the conference."
The 2003 edition of the Falcons will head to Terre Haute, Ind., this weekend to compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship. That meet is set for Saturday (Nov. 15), with top teams and individuals advancing to the NCAA Championships (Nov. 24).
