The Bowling Green State University football team defeated Kent State University, 42-33, at Perry Stadium Saturday evening (Nov. 15). The following are some notes and numbers from the game...
BGSU NOTES
The Falcons now lead the all-time series with Kent State by a 51-15-6 margin ... BGSU has won the last 15 meetings with the Flashes at Perry Stadium, dating to 1974.
The Falcons have the longest active MAC home winning streak at 12 games, and BG has averaged 50.2 points per game since beginning that streak with a 56-21 win over Toledo on Nov. 23, 2001.
Senior quarterback Josh Harris ran for 70 yards and two touchdowns in the win ... Harris is now the BGSU career scoring leader with 254 career points scored ... Brian Leaver (1991-94) previously held the record with 247 points, while Dave Preston (1973-76) had 246 points to hold the old record for non-kickers.
Harris also became the school record-holder for career touchdowns ... he now has scored a total of 42 TDs, surpassing Preston's record of 41 ... Harris now has 39 career rushing TDs, tying Preston for the career lead on that list.
The Falcons are now 8-2 on the season, after going 9-3 last year and 8-3 in 2001 ... the last time BGSU won eight or more games in three consecutive seasons was 1983-85 ,,, the Falcons have won 25 games since the start of the 2001 season, the highest three-season win total since 1992-94 (also 25 wins during that time) ... BGSU has two regular-season games remaining in 2003, at Ball State (Nov. 22) and at home vs. Toledo (Nov. 28).
The Falcons have now won 12 straight night games (after 6 p.m.) at Doyt Perry Stadium since the 1999 season. In addition, the Falcons are 14-1 in home night games since the 1990 season, including 10-0 since 2001.
BGSU controls its own destiny in the race for the MAC West Division title ... the Falcons are tied with Toledo for the division lead, as both teams are now 5-1 in league play ... Northern Illinois is 5-2 in MAC action after Saturday's loss at UT.
Charles Sharon had seven receptions for 178 yards and a touchdown ... the seven catches ties his career high, set against Ohio last season ... he now has two career games of 100-plus yards, as his previous career-high total of 123 yards came two games ago vs. Northern Illinois.
Harris and Sharon hooked up on a 91-yard TD pass in the second quarter ... it marked the longest play in the careers of both players, and was the third-longest pass play in school history ... the record was a 96-yard TD throw from Mark Miller to Dave Dudley in a 1976 game vs. San Diego State.
Sharon has caught a TD pass in three consecutive games for the second time in his career ... he also had a three-game TD streak midway through last season (vs. Western Michigan, Ball State and KSU).
Cole Magner's 41-yard run was the longest of his career ... on the reverse, his only run of the game, Magner racked up the second-highest rushing game total of his BGSU tenure ... he had 14 carries for 86 yards as a freshman in a 2001 game at Akron ... Magner started that UA game at quarterback.
A pair of BGSU tight ends each caught their first career touchdown passes ... Steve Navarro caught a six-yard scoring pass from Harris on the opening drive of the third quarter, and Craig Jarrett had a seven-yard TD catch early in the fourth quarter.
Freshman Justin Martin caught his first career pass, a seven-yarder from Harris late in the first half.
Harris completed passes to eight different receivers in the win ... he was 24-of-35 for 324 yards and three touchdowns ... Harris, who did not throw an interception in the game, now has four 300-yard passing games this season and six in his career.
The BGSU offense racked up 621 yards, an average of 8.0 per play ... the Falcons have surpassed the 500-yard mark 11 times in the last 24 games, including seven games of over 600 yards ... in 10 games this year, BGSU has gone over the 500-yard barrier six times and the 600-yard mark on four occasions ... BG has had 508 or more yards in each of the last six home games, dating to the final home contest of 2002.
The Falcons rushed for a season-high 298 yards with sophomore P.J. Pope accounting for 98 yards, sophomore B.J. Lane notching a career-high 89, Harris with 70 and Magner's 41 yards.
Harris now has accumulated 8,633 yards of total offense ... he is now 21-6 in his career as a starting quarterback.
Sophomore linebacker Ted Piepkow led the Falcons with 12 tackles and junior linebacker Jovon Burkes added 11 stops. Both senior Janssen Patton and junior Keon Newson each had three pass deflections. Senior Rick Mauer had the team's lone sack, a 13-yard loss.
KSU NOTES
Kent State quarterback Joshua Cribbs had more than 100 yards, both passing and rushing, by halftime ... Cribbs finished the game with totals of 196 yards on the ground and 239 through the air ... the game marked the sixth time in his career that Cribbs has recorded more than 100 yards both rushing and passing in the same game.
Cribbs surpassed the 7,000-yard plateau for total offense in his career ... he now has 7,359 yards of total offense to rank second on the KSU career list ... Cribbs trails only Jose Davis (7,576 yards from 1997-99) on that list.
Cribbs now has registered 2,213 yards passing and 2,753 yards of total offense this season ... he now has 2,616 career rushing yards to rank fourth on that KSU career chart.
