Falcons Fall At IUPUI, 89-74

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team ended the pre-holiday portion of the schedule with an 89-74 road loss to IUPUI Monday night (Dec. 22) at the IUPUI Gymnasium. The Falcons drop to 4-4 on the season.
The Falcons held a lopsided rebounding advantage, but struggled shooting the ball. BGSU shot .276 from the floor in the first half and .318 for the game.
The Falcons led early in the game, going ahead by six points, 13-7, after a steal and layup by junior Tene Lewis. From that point, however, the host Jaguars (2-7) scored the next four points to begin a 13-3 run and take the lead for good.
BGSU drew within a point, 19-18, on a pair of free throws by sophomore Marisa Smith, but a Brooke Boggs three-point field goal began a 9-2 run that put the host team ahead by eight points (28-20) at the 6:13 mark. The Jags led by as many as 11 points before settling for a 45-37 halftime margin.
The Falcons began the second half by scoring eight of the first 13 points, pulling within 50-45 on a Stefanie Wenzel shot at the 17:32 mark. But, the Jaguars responded with an 11-2 run over the next three minutes, and the Falcons never got within single digits again.
The Jaguars followed with four three-pointers in a five-possession span, extending the lead to 75-53. IUPUI led by as many as 24 points (88-64) before BGSU closed the game on a 10-1 run.
The Falcons dominated the boards, outrebounding the Jags by 17, 52-35. A total of 27 of BGSU's rebounds came at the offensive end.
The hosts made 12 three-pointers in 26 attempts, including a 7-of-12 performance (.583) from long distance in the second half. BGSU made six treys in 18 attempts.
The teams combined for 50 personal fouls and 80 free-throw attempts. IUPUI made 31 free throws in 44 tries (.705), while the Falcons were 26-of-36 (.722) from the stripe.
Kia Hayes led four Jaguars in double digits with 15 points, while Erin Guy came off the bench to score 14. Jessica James had a double-double with 12 points and a career-best 11 rebounds, while Boggs had a career-high 11 points.
The Falcons also had four players in double digits, including freshman Ali Mann. Mann had a game-high 16 points and tied for team honors with nine rebounds. Senior Lindsay Austin had 15 points and eight boards, while Wenzel added 11 points. Freshman Megan Thorburn had 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Falcons return to action on Monday, Dec. 29, taking on host Eastern Kentucky in the EKU Comfort Suites Classic in Richmond, Ky. The next day (Dec. 30), BGSU will face Morehead State.
