San Jose State University pushed the go-ahead run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning, then held the Bowling Green State University softball team off the scoreboard in the seventh frame for a 6-5 decision Friday morning (Feb. 14). The contest, the season opener for the Falcons, was part of the New Mexico State University Tournament at Presley Askew Field.
The win gives SJSU a 2-3 overall record, while the Falcons, of course, are 0-1 on the year.
Senior Libby Voshell homered and drove in two runs in the game, while freshman Gina Rango also homered in her collegiate debut. Rango scored two runs and had two RBI.
Senior McKenna Houle suffered the loss in a complete-game effort, allowing five earned runs and six hits. She walked three batters and had three strikeouts.
Carol Forbes pitched two-and-a-third innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win for the Spartans.
BGSU took the lead with a second-inning run, before SJSU got five runs in the bottom of that frame. The Falcons battled back, scoring twice in both the third and the fifth, before seeing the Spartans break the tie in the bottom of the sixth.
The Falcons are back in action later Friday, taking on MAC foe Marshall in a contest scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. local time (6:30 p.m. Eastern).
