Fresno, Calif. - UNC-Asheville broke open a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning with five runs and went on to post a 6-0 win over Bowling Green on Wednesday afternoon in the third day of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic, hosted by Fresno State University at Pete Beiden Field.
BGSU left-hander Neil Schmitz started the game for the Falcons and held the Bulldogs in check through six innings. However, Schmitz led off the top of the seventh inning by issuing a walk to the first two batters. After a passed ball moved both runners into scoring position, Nick Jaksa singled home one of the runners for a 1-0 UNCA lead.
Tom Oestrike entered in relief for Schmitz and threw a wild pitch to the first batter he faced, scoring the second run of the game for the Bulldogs. A walk and another wild pitch scored the third run of the inning before Josh Coyle put the finishing touches on the inning with a two-run home run off of Oestrike for a 5-0 UNCA lead.
UNCA (4-9) added another run in the top of the eighth inning for the final 6-0 decision.
The Falcons collected only three hits off of Bulldog starter Steven Cook, who pitched nine shutout innings, walking none and striking out four. Collecting base hits for BGSU were David Barkholz, Steve Raszka and Bobby Majer.
Schmitz (0-1) pitched six innings, allowing four hits, walking four and striking out two. Oestrike lasted two innings, giving up three runs with one walk and a strikeout while Ryan Lindquist pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
BGSU drops to 1-5 overall on the season and 0-3 in the Blue Division of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic.
