Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green used a four-run fourth inning to break open a 2-2 tie and went on to post a 8-3 win over visiting Dayton on Wednesday afternoon at Warren Steller Field.
BGSU knocked out five-straight singles in the fourth inning with one out to plate four runs. Freshman Bobby Majer began the hit parade with a single to center field, followed by freshman Tyler Wasserman's single to right field, then sophomore Jayson Selgo singled to right-center field, scoring Majer. Junior David Barkholz then singled to left field, scoring Wasserman. After Barkholz and Selgo pulled off a double steal, sophomore Jimmy Lipari singled to left field, scoring the final two runs of the inning for a 6-2 Falcon lead.
Dayton scored a run in the top of the fifth inning before BGSU added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off of RBI hits from Jeff Warnock and Kelly Hunt for the final 8-3 verdict.
RS-sophomore Keith Laughlin started the game on the mound for the Falcons, lasting four innings and allowing six hits, two runs and three strikeouts. Freshman Tyler Johnson (1-0) pitched the next three innings, surrendering four hits and one run with one walk to pick up his first collegiate win.
Burke Badenhop (one hit, no runs) and Doug Flere (no hits, no runs) pitched the eighth and ninth innings for the Falcons who lowered their staff earned run average to a league-low 4.06.
"It's repitition," said BGSU pitching coach Tod Brown. "You have to get in a good rhythm and I think our guys are doing that, which helps all phases of our game." BGSU has given up just seven earned runs in its last five games.
Hunt led the Falcons at the plate by finishing 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Lipari had two RBI while Barkholz collected BGSU's lone extra-base hit (double). BGSU had 13 hits compared to Dayton's 11 while the Flyers committed three errors.
The Falcons improve to 4-8 overall (2-0 in the Mid-American Conference) while Dayton dropped to 6-13 overall. BGSU returns to league action with a four-game series against Eastern Michigan this weekend, March 28-30. The Falcons will play at EMU on Friday in a 6 p.m. contest, then host the Eagles in a doubleheader on Saturday (12 noon), and return to Ypsilanti, Mich. for one game on Sunday (1 p.m.).
