Johnson Named 2002-03 Female Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Seniors Craig Jarrett (football) and Katrina Kerns (women's track and cross country) and juniors Jody Johnson (softball) and Craig Pickerel (men's golf) took home top honors at the 2003 BGSU Scholar-Athlete Honors Banquet.
Jarrett, a resident of Bellevue, Ohio, was named the 2002-03 Male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He holds a 4.0 GPA with a double major in biology and chemistry. A tight end on the football team, he is recovering from major knee surgery and will complete his eligibility with the Falcons in 2003. He also has earned the MAC Commissioner's Award and has been a member of the MAC Honor Roll.
Kerns, who hails from Bellefontaine, Ohio, was named the 2002-03 Female Senior Student-Athlete of the Year. She is a biology/pre-med major with a 4.0 GPA. A distance runner who competes in track and cross country, she also has earned the MAC Commissioner's Award and has been a member of the MAC Honor Roll.
Both were honored with the Meserve Scholarship which is named for longtime BGSU Faculty Athletics Representative and professor Dr. Lee Meserve and his wife, Marge. The couple also was honored with a special recognition award at the banquet.
Johnson, a native of LaGrange, Ohio, was named this year's 2002-03 Falcon Club Female Junior Student-Athlete of the Year. She holds a 3.5 grade point average and is majoring in marketing. A pitcher for the softball team, she earned the MAC Commissioner's Award this year and has been a member of the MAC Honor Roll.
Pickerel, a native of Genoa, Ohio, was named this year's 2002-03 Falcon Club Male Junior Student-Athlete of the Year. He has a cumulative GPA of 3.86 with a major in architecture & environmental design studies. The Falcons' top golfer with a 73.38 average, he earned the MAC Commissioner's Award this year and has been a member of the MAC Honor Roll.
Four teams also were lauded for their academic achievement.
Hockey received the award for Most Improved GPA for teams with 20 or more participants. They improved from a 2.85 GPA in Fall 2001 to a 3.08 GPA this past fall. They had two players earn 4.0 GPA's, six above a 3.5 GPA, and 10 above 3.0 or higher.
Women's tennis earned the award for Most Improved GPA for teams with fewer than 20 participants. They improved from a 2.89 GPA to a 3.26 average. They also have one player with a 4.0 GPA three above a 3.5 GPA, and eight above 3.0.
Women's cross country earned the award for Highest GPA for large teams. They boasted a 3.44 GPA. Eighty-two percent of their squad earned a 3.0 GPA or better with one registering a perfect 4.0.
Volleyball earned the award for Highest GPA for teams with less than 20 members. They boasted a 3.61 GPA. All of the team earned a GPA above 2.97 with two squad members earning a perfect 4.0.
Dr. Thomas Shehab, a former Falcon football player was the keynote speaker, and received the Distinguished Alumni Award.
Eighty-eight student athletes were recognized for achieving a grade point average of 3.5 or better .
