BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Alyson Gabel is the Bowling Green State University Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Gabel, a senior on the BGSU women's tennis team, posted a 4-0 record as the Falcons won a pair of matches over the weekend.
Gabel, a native of Toledo, Ohio, won at singles and doubles as BGSU downed Akron and Buffalo to close the regular season on a four-match winning streak. The Falcons, picked to finish seventh in the preseason coaches poll, finished fifth in the final MAC regular-season standings. BGSU, now 10-10 overall, has doubled last season's win total.
The Falcons' current four-match win streak in MAC action is the team's first in nearly two decades, since BG won the last three MAC matches in 1982-83 and the opening league contest in 1983-84
On Friday (April 18), Gabel posted a straight-sets victory over Akron's Diana Serafini at the third flight, and teamed with junior Gaby Coello for a second-flight doubles win in that match. Then, on Saturday afternoon (April 19), she and Coello again won at the second doubles flight vs. UB. Gabel moved up to the second singles level for that match, and again won in straight sets, over Kristen Ortman.
Gabel, a team co-captain, won her last four singles matches to close the regular season, and has an overall five-match win streak (both singles and doubles) heading into the MAC Championships.
Gabel, a financial economics major, has a 3.93 cumulative grade point average through the fall, 2002, semester.
The Falcons (10-10, 5-4 MAC) of head coach Penny Dean, the fifth seed for the MAC Championships, have earned a first-round bye and will face #4 Northern Illinois in a quarterfinal match Friday morning (April 25). The Falcons and Huskies will meet in a 10:00 a.m. contest at Ypsilanti High School.
