BGSU Women's Golf Finishes Sixth at MAC Championships

Cincinnati, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's golf team finished sixth out of nine teams at the 2003 Mid-American Conference Championship on Sunday. BGSU finished with a three-round score of 959 (307, 332, 320). The three-day championship was held at Walden Ponds Golf Course in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Senior Emily Hassen saved her best tournament for last at BGSU by finishing tied for 10th place overall with a three-round score of 233. On day one, Hassen shot a career-low round of 74, followed by rounds of 81 on Saturday and 78 on Sunday. Her score of 78 on Sunday was the lowest among all Falcons on the final day. Her only other appearance in the MAC Championship was in 2001 when she finished tied for 32nd place.
Fellow senior Shelley Binzel finished tied for 15th place with a score of 235. Binzel shot three rounds of 76, 79, and 80. It was the third time in four years that Binzel finished among the top 15 at the MAC Championship and she was just one stroke off of her lowest score ever at the league tournament (234 in 2001). Binzel was named All-MAC Second Team for the third time in her career. Last year she tied for 16th place (245) and she was 11th as a freshman in 2000 (238).
Junior Jenny Schnipke was the third-highest Falcon at the tournament, finishing tied for 26th place with a score of 245 (79, 83, 83). Schnipke was sixth as a freshman and tied for sixth last season at the MAC Championship.
Senior Stephanie Elsea finished 34th with a score of 252 (78, 89, 85) and freshman Amanda Schroeder was 40th with a score of 264 (88, 97, 79). Schroeder's score of 79 was the second-lowest among all Falcons in the final round on Sunday.
Kent State won the championship with a score of 888, while KSU's Veronique Drouin won the individual championship with a score of 219.

Individual award winners announced at the end of the competition included MAC Freshman-of-the-Year Heather Nolan of Eastern Michigan; MAC Golfer-of-the-Year in Veronique Drouin of Kent State; MAC Coach-of-the-Year Mike Morrow of Kent State.
The Sportswoman-of-the-Year, as voted on by the participants at the championship was Angie Kephart (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) of Toledo.
