Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will compete over the next three days at the 2003 Mid-American Conference Golf Championship, May 1-3, at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Course in Sugar Grove, Ill. The tournament is being hosted by Northern Illinois University.
There will only be two Falcons returning from last year's MAC Championship, including sophomore Austin Chase and redshirt-sophomore Craig Pickerel. Both finished tied for 27th with a 72-hole score of 306. Senior Andy Miller did not play at last year's MAC Championship and senior Adam Balls, who was the top finisher for the Falcons last year, is being redshirted this season.
Chase leads the Falcons in average this season (73.88) but has only played in 16 rounds. His best finish this season came at the Xavier Invitational where he finished 15th with a 54-hole score of 217.
Pickerel has played in every event for the Falcons with two top-five finishes. He is second on the team with a 74.24 average in 25 rounds. Pickerel finished tied for fifth at the season-opening John Piper Intercollegiate held in Bowling Green (215) and finished third at the Xavier Invitational with a school-record score of 208. At Xavier, he shot back-to-back rounds of 68 (career-lows) to finish the tournament and break BGSU coach Garry Winger's 54-hole school record.
Miller recently established new career marks at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, hosted by Penn State last weekend. Miller shot a career-best score of 217 (54-holes) and carded a 69 in his second round of the tournament, also a career-best. He finished tied for 15th. He also tied for 21st in March at the Bullock Collegiate, hosted by Wright State, with a score of 227. Miller has an average of 76.32 in 25 rounds this season.
Also competing for the Falcons will be freshmen Chris Leake and Bud Ziglar. Leake is third on the team with a 75.39 average in 23 rounds. His season-low round of 54 holes came in March at the Bullock Intercollegiate when he carded a 221 to finish tied for fifth. Ziglar has an average of 76.64 through 25 rounds. His best tournament score came back in the fall at the Ball State Invitational (221), good enough for a tie for 30th place.
BGSU finished eighth out of 10 teams last year with a score of 1,212 (303, 305, 298, 306). Adam Balls was the top finisher for BGSU, finishing tied for ninth (294).
