Muncie, Ind. - Bowling Green dropped a doubleheader to Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. on a windy and cold Mother's Day afternoon. The Falcons lost game one, 15-1, and game two, 16-11. BGSU scored its only run of the game in the first inning in game one, while in game two the Falcons scored in four-straight innings but could not get the victory.
In game one, David Barkholz led of the game with a double, his second game in a row that he had accomplished that, and was brought home on a single up the middle by freshman Nolan Reimold for a 1-0 Falcon lead.
The Cardinals answered big time in the bottom of the inning, though. BGSU starter Keith Laughlin threw just over 30 pitches to the first seven batters of the game, walking four, hitting two and giving up no hits. BSU was able to plate six runs off of him while he lasted just one-third of an inning. The Cardinals ended with seven runs in the first inning for a 7-1 lead.
Freshman Tyler Johnson entered in relief of Laughlin and lasted four and two-third innings, giving up six runs on eight hits, two walks and five strikeouts. Doug Flere pitched the sixth inning, giving up three runs on three hits and two walks.
BSU held a 11-7 hit advantage with Barkholz and Kevin Longstreth the only Falcons with multiple hits (two apiece). Both teams stranded seven runners in the seven-inning game while BSU's Brian Lynch (7-3) picked up the win.
In game two, the Falcons fell behind early but came storming back. The Cardinals plated three runs in the first inning before BGSU cut into the deficit with two runs in the top of the second frame. Nolan Reimold and Kevin Longstreth hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning, then both came home on a single to centerfield by Jeff Warnock.
From there both teams traded runs for the next three-straight innings. First, BSU built its lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the second inning only to have the Falcons tie the game with two runs in the top of the third inning. The Cardinals regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning with two runs only to have BGSU take its first lead of the game in the fourth inning with three runs, 7-6.
BSU plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to regain its lead, 8-7, before the Falcons exploded for their biggest inning of the weekend. Freshman Tyler Wasserman hit a two-out single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a double by David Barkholz. Steve Raszka pinch-hit for Dash Yost and received a base on balls to put runners on first and second base. Senior Kelly Hunt then stepped to the plate and hit his first home run of the weekend, eighth of the season, and 44th of his career over the right-center field fence to give the Falcons an 11-8 lead.
It didn't last long, though, as the Cardinals registered its second seven-run inning of the day with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and a 15-11 lead. BSU added another run in the sixth inning for its final 16-11 verdict.
BGSU pounded out 17 hits in the game while Ball State knocked out 15 hits. BSU stranded 15 runners while the Falcons left nine on base. Barkholz was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Nolan Reimold and Tyler Wasserman were 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Hunt finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored
The Falcons fall to 14-26 overall and 7-16 in the MAC West Division. Ball State improved to 33-17 overall and 14-9 in the MAC West Division. BGSU next plays on Tuesday, May 13, at the University of Detroit-Mercy, scheduled for 2 p.m. before ending its season with a four-game series against Toledo (May 16-18).
