CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference office has authorized the release of the MAC Academic Honor Roll for the 2002-03 academic year, and six members of the Bowling Green State University women's tennis team were among those honored. The BGSU athletic department had a total of 122 student-athletes selected.
To be eligible, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher. True freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible, as a student-athlete must have attended the institution for an entire year to qualify for the award. The women's tennis team's total of six members selected represented 75% of the team's eligible student-athletes.
For the women's tennis Falcons, the six honorees include senior Alyson Gabel, juniors Jessica Johnson and Lisa Maloney and sophomores Laura Kokinda, Lindsey Mix and Susie Schoenberger. (Note: each player's year of eligibility reflects the 2002-03 academic year).
The 2002-03 Falcons of head coach Penny Dean finished the season with an overall dual-match record of 10-11. The Falcons' total of 10 wins doubled the victory total of the previous season (5-18 in 2001-02). The Brown and Orange, predicted to finish seventh in the MAC last season, finished fifth in the league with a 5-4 mark. Dean had just one senior -- Gabel -- on the 10-member 2002-03 squad.
BGSU's list of honorees follows. The cumulative GPA figures for each student-athlete are through the fall, 2002, semester, as the nominations were made before the conclusion of the spring, 2003, semester.
