BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University cross country teams, after hosting a dual meet last weekend, will conclude the home portion of the 2003 schedule with the 17th annual Mel Brodt Invitational. The men's eight-kilometer race is scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m., with the women's 5K race set for a 2:00 p.m. start.
PARTICIPATING TEAMS
(Both men's and women's teams unless noted)
Bowling Green, Baldwin-Wallace, Central Michigan (women only), Cincinnati, Cleveland State (women only), Dayton, Findlay, Heidelberg (men only), Huntington (Ind.), IPFW, John Carroll, Oakland (women only), Ohio, Siena Heights
COURSE INFORMATION
The starting line is located on the 14th hole of Forrest Creason Golf Course, which runs along Stadium Drive just north of Doyt Perry Stadium. The finish chute is located to the east of Perry Stadium and the tents that comprise the Meijer Tailgate Park, and just west of Interstate 75.
Fans interested in attending the races are encouraged to park in the overflow area of Lot 6. That parking area is adjacent to the finish chute.
DIRECTIONS
The best way to get to the course is to take I-75. Exit at the Bowling Green exit (Exit 181) and proceed west toward campus (toward the football stadium). Turn right at the first light, and then make a right on Stadium Drive (first right, just before the campus information booth). Take Stadium Drive; the road will curve to the left. The tents for the Meijer Tailgate Park will be on the left, and the finish chute for the Mel Brodt Invitational will be on the right. Turn right into the parking lot.
The Falcon teams of head coach Cami Wells hosted arch-rival Toledo on Friday (Sept. 5). The Rocket men downed the Falcons, 18-39, while the women's teams tied, 28-28.
In the women's race, senior Amber Culp was the top BGSU finisher for the eighth consecutive race, dating to last season. Culp was third overall, while freshmen Andrea Pollack and Bridget Dalic were fourth and sixth, respectively.
Junior Patrick Maynard was the first Falcon finisher in the men's race, placing fourth overall. Freshman Edwin Cheruiyot, in his first collegiate race, was sixth, while classmates Edgar Ramirez and Jeff Wright were eighth and 10th, respectively.
"We are looking forward to our first invitational of the year," said Wells. "Both fields are fairly large, with 13 teams on the women's side and 11 on the men's side.
"The women are looking forward to racing Central Michigan and Ohio. It is important for us to perform well against other MAC schools. There are several other quality teams and individuals in the race as well, so it will be a good test for us Saturday.
"The men will also have an opportunity to race against fellow MAC foe Ohio in addition to several other teams. This will be our first 8K of the season, and the first-ever 8K race for many of our younger men.
"The men continue to push themselves in practice and work to improve. I have seen a lot of positive things so far this year, but there is a lot of work yet to be done. The next few weeks are important for us to set the tone for the remainder of the season."
Following Saturday's races, the Falcons will prepare for the Toledo Invitational, scheduled for Sept. 20.
