BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team's fall schedule has a definite Ohio flavor, but head coach Leigh Ross-Shaw is hoping Falcon alumnae, both in-state and out-of-state, can help kick off the season.
The Falcons will open the fall portion of the 2003-04 schedule on Sunday (Sept. 14) with the team's annual alumnae game. That contest is set for noon at the BGSU Softball Field, and alums interested in playing are encouraged to contact the Falcon softball office at (419) 372-7159.
Following the alumnae game, the current edition of the Falcons will play Findlay in a 2:00 p.m. game. Sunday's games mark BGSU's only home contests during the fall schedule.
The Falcons' other fall action sees the team heading to two in-state tournaments, with nine of the 10 games in those tourneys coming against other Ohio schools. BGSU will head to the Kent State Fall Invitational on Sept. 27-28. The Falcons' scheduled competition at KSU includes Ashland, Gannon (the lone non-Ohio foe) and host KSU on Saturday (Sept. 27), and Cleveland State and Akron the following day.
BGSU closes the fall slate with a trip to Columbus for the Ohio Charity Classic on Oct. 4-5. The Falcons will play Youngstown State, host Ohio State and Ohio on Saturday (Oct. 4), and will meet arch-rival Toledo and Dayton the next day.
The Falcons will begin the spring season with a tournament at Mercer (Macon, Ga.) on Feb. 27-29, 2004.
The Falcons finished the 2003 campaign with an overall record of 26-26-1, and BGSU posted a Mid-American Conference ledger of 15-9 to finish fourth in the West Division and fifth overall. BG advanced to the MAC Tournament for the fifth time in six seasons, and the Falcons' win in the opening tourney game, 7-2 over Northern Illinois, made Ross-Shaw the winningest coach in school history.
