BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University cross country teams opened the home portion of the 2003 schedule Friday afternoon (Sept. 5), and the Falcon women raced the arch-rival University of Toledo to a draw, 28-28. In the men's race, the visiting Rockets recorded a win, scoring 18 points to the Falcons' 39.
On the women's side, senior Amber Culp was the top Falcon finisher for the eighth consecutive race, dating to last season. Culp placed third overall in the 23-woman, 5K race, posting a time of 18:02. Freshmen Andrea Pollack and Bridge Dalic were the second and third Falcons to cross the finish line for the second-straight weekend. Pollack was fourth overall in a time of 18:11, while Dalic placed sixth (18:31).
Juniors Melissa Krueger (seventh, 18:33) and Nicole Suitor (eighth, 18:36) and sophomore Emily Jackson (10th, 19:00) all finished in the top 10 Friday. Other Falcon competitors included sophomore Leslie Carden (12th, 19:07), freshman Kim Settle (14th, 19:24), junior Elise Gould (15th, 19:49), sophomores Jayme Ramson (16th, 19:56) and Caroline Kipchaba (17th, 19:58), senior Ellen Alkire (22nd, 21:38) and sophomore Heather Gustin (23rd, 23:55).
Toledo's Chris Tye was the individual winner, in a time of 17:19.
"I was pleased with the women's team performance today," said BGSU head coach Cami Wells. "Obviously, we had our sights set on winning, so tying was a little disappointing, but we fought for every place and that was great to see.
"I felt we had a very solid team effort today from our first runner to our 13th. We had several women run personal best times, including Andrea Pollack, Bridget Dalic, Emily Jackson, Jayme Ramson, Ellen Alkire and Heather Gustin. Also, we got some strong efforts by veterans as well. Amber Culp, Melissa Krueger, and Niki Suitor all looked very good today."
In the men's race, junior Patrick Maynard was the top Falcon finisher, placing fourth in the 14-man, 5K race. Maynard posted a time of 15:41. UT's Abraham Habte was the individual winner in a time of 15:10.
Falcon freshman Edwin Cheruiyot, in his first collegiate race, was sixth overall, crossing the line in 15:54. Other Falcon finishers included freshmen Edgar Ramirez (eighth, 15:55) and Jeff Wright (10th, 16:37), juniors Kris Lachowski (11th, 16:37) and Steve Vairetta (12th, 16:49), senior Jake Smith (13th, 17:18) and freshman Aaron Hemmelgarn (14th, 18:48).
"We were a little disappointed by the team scores on the men's side," said Wells. "But, this gives us a sense of where we are as a team, and what we need to work on in the future.
"We did have several men set personal records today as well, including Patrick Maynard, Jeff Wright, Steve Varietta, Jake Smith and Aaron Hemmelgarn. Pat had a solid effort for us today.
"Edwin Cheruiyot is still working his way back into shape after a knee injury this summer, but he had a good start to the year, Edgar Ramirez has been battling a cold all week, so his performance today was a gutsy one. Jeff Wright also ran a nice race and is gaining confidence."
The Falcons now prepare for the only other home meet of the 2003 season, the Mel Brodt Invitational. That meet is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13, with the men's race starting at 1:15 p.m. and the women's race set for 2:00 p.m.
