Duluth, Minn. - After jumping out to an early 1-0 lead, Bowling Green allowed four unanswered goals in the first period and dropped a 6-1 decision to non-conference opponent Minnesota-Duluth. It marked the first head-to-head competition between the two schools since BGSU defeated the Bulldogs, 5-4, in quadruple overtime in the 1984 NCAA Division I National Championship.
BGSU came out hitting on all cylinders to begin the game, outshooting the Bulldogs 8-1 in the first seven minutes of the contest and controlling the tempo of the game.
Sophomore Mike Falk put the Falcons on the board first at 4:08 of the first period when he and Mark Wires worked a 2-on-1 fast break. Falk passed from left to right to Wires, who then gave it back to Falk and he backhanded the puck in for his first score of the season.
"I thought the first 10 minutes of the game we played extremely well," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "We put some pressure on in the offensive zone and cycled the puck. After the first 10 minutes of the game their players in the offensive zone controlled the game. They are a very skilled group. Consequently they had the puck and we weren't able to generate any offense. Our defensive zone really broke down tonight.
"Their 12 forwards and six defensemen, that's as quick and as skilled a team we've played."
UMD's Evan Schwabe knotted the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal at 8:38 of the first period. It was the first PPG surrendered by BGSU in three games (Nov. 29 vs. Ohio State). Luke Stauffacher then gave UMD the lead for good at 12:09 of the first period. It would be his first of three goals on the night. In all, UMD netted four goals in the first period to stake a 4-1 lead.
After a slim 16-15 shot advantage in the first period, the Bulldogs held a 14-6 advantage in the second period and an 11-5 edge in the third period. For the game, UMD had a 41-26 advantage.
UMD finished 2-for-4 on the power play while BGSU was 0-for-2. Jordan Sigalet had 35 saves in 60 minutes of action.
The two teams match up again Saturday night in the final non-conference game for both teams this season. Face-off is scheduled for 8:05 EST in Duluth, Minn.
