
Falcons Fall To Golden Flashes

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) - Senior John Edwards scored five key points in the closing minutes and sophomore DeAndre Haynes scored 21 points to lead Kent State past Bowling Green 71-64 on Wednesday night.
With the Golden Flashes trailing 59-58 with under four minutes to play, Edwards sank two free throws with 3:32 left to give KSU the lead for good and then made a layup and ensuing free throw with 1:52 remaining to give the visitors 63-59 lead.
Haynes was 8-of-14 from the field and hit 4-of-5 3-point attempts for the Golden Flashes (13-3, 7-1 Mid-American Conference).
The Falcons (8-10, 4-4) shot just 35 percent from the field, including 24 percent from beyond the 3-point line. Of Bowling Green's 51 shots, 34 were 3-point attempts, a new school record and the Falcons made just eight.
Kent State, meanwhile, shot 43 percent from the field and hit 9-of-17 3-point attempts.
The game was close throughout with BGSU taking its largest lead at 14-8 on a three-pointer by sophomore Ron Lewis with 13:26 remaining in the first half. KSU forced the Falcons to rely on the outside shots (19 of 25 first-half field goal attempts were from beyond the arc) and went into the locker rooom with a 34-29 halftime advantage.
BGSU, which was 3-0 at home in MAC play entering the game, tried to gain the upper hand on several occasions. Back-to-back baskets by senior Kevin Netter tied the score at 40-40 with 16:14 left, but Haynes calmly sank a three-pointer following at KSU timeout.
Junior Josh Almanson hit a three-pointer with 6:57 left to tie the game at 54-54. Following two free throws apiece for each team and a dunk by Edwards, junior John Reimold drained a three-pointer from the left corner with 4:02 remaining to gibe BGSU its only second-half advantage.
Reimoldscored 15 points to lead BGSU. Netter added 14 and Almanson scored 11.
Edwards and senior Matt Jakeway scored 14 points apiece for Kent State. Jakeway also added five key offensive rebounds.
