BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University freshman Liz Honegger's 22 points led four double-digit scorers as the Falcon women's basketball team closed the non-conference portion of the schedule with an 82-67 win over Cleveland State University at Anderson Arena Saturday afternoon (Jan. 3).
With the victory, the Falcons move to 7-4, and have a season-best three-game winning streak, while the visiting Vikings drop to 4-7 on the year.
Senior Stefanie Wenzel added 18 points for the Brown and Orange, while Lindsay Austin had a double-double, with 14 points and a game-high 12 assists. Freshman Megan Thorburn added 13 points for the Falcons.
For the Vikings, Shannon Sword had 22 points, while Ashley Schrock and Maria Rickards had 14 apiece. Schrock added 10 assists.
The Falcons kept the Vikings off the scoreboard at the start of each half, scoring the first five points of the game and the first nine points after intermission. An offensive rebound and layup by BG freshman Ali Mann in the game's first 30 seconds gave the home team a lead they would never relinquish.
The Vikings battled back to within two points, at 7-5, before a Honneger layup sparked a 9-0 run. Honegger capped that run with a three-pointer to give the Falcons a 16-5 lead at the 15:42 mark.
CSU rallied to score the next eight points and get within three points, but the Falcons answered with yet another run, as a Honegger layup began an 11-0 stretch for the home team. Austin followed Honegger's hoop with a layup of her own, and Mann hit a trey. Then, Honegger and Thorburn each scored baskets, and the lead was 27-13. CSU's Karyn Woloszynek split a pair of free-throw tries to break a scoreless spell of 6:33 for the Vikes.
BGSU led by as many as 17 points on three occasions, but saw the visitors hit a pair of three-pointers in the final minute to cut the margin to 11. Honegger's basket at the first-half buzzer gave the Falcons a 43-30 lead at the break.
When the second half began, Wenzel hit a pair of layups in the first 25 seconds, with the second coming off an Austin steal. A Thorburn jumper was followed by a Honegger triple at the 16:26 mark, and the lead was 22 points. CSU would get no closer than 18 points until the final two minutes of the game.
The Falcons shot .484 from the field, including a .514 percentage in the first half, while holding the Vikings to a .397 rate. BGSU had only 12 turnovers on the day, with five of those coming in the game's final six minutes. CSU committed 15 turnovers in the game.
Honegger was 9-of-12 from the field, including a 3-for-5 performance from three-point range.
BGSU shot .368 (7-of-19) from three-point range and .929 (13-of-14) from the free-throw line. CSU made 6-of-14 triples (.429) and 11-of-15 charity tosses (.733).
The teams battled to a deadlock on the boards, with each team grabbing 38 rebounds. Honegger had a game-high nine rebounds, while Mann added seven for the Falcons. Woloszynek had seven boards for CSU, with Schrock and Rickards each pulling down six.
Austin had her 12-assist game while committing just one turnover. The double-double was her team-leading fourth of the young season.
The Falcons now prepare for Mid-American Conference play, hosting defending West Division co-champion Ball State in Wednesday (Jan. 7) action. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Anderson.
