BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -
BGSU HEAD COACH CURT MILLER
"It was a heartbreaker to lose. We made them play ugly for the first time since (Miller's staff) got here. That (Ball State) is a team that, in the first three times we played them, averaged about 91 points against us. We finally made them play ugly, and got the game at more of a tempo where we thought we could win, and I was very proud of the kids. We didn't play great all night, and certainly missed a lot of key shots that we're capable of making. But, Carin Horne's play kept us in it and gave us a chance to win, and that's all you can ask for -- a chance to win it in the last minute at home, and I just felt like we were going to step up tonight and make the big play to win the game."
"Hats off to Kate Endress, who I think is the best player in the league, offensively. She made two big baskets for them, when they needed them most."
"We called plays for our seniors down the stretch. We had a great night, turnover-wise, with only 11 turnovers. But, two of turnovers came in the last minute-and-a-half, both by seniors. But, I have ultimate faith that, since they have been through the battles, they will step up and make a big basket."
"Defensively, Ball State's adjustment late in the game was to show absolutely no help. It opened up the lane, and it opened up some one-on-one opportunities. But, unfortunately, we just missed a couple of those opportunities late in the game."
(On Carin Horne's three-point attempt in the final seconds)
"We ran a set play for Carin to get an open three. If they ran at her, she had the option to drive, and try to tie it and send the game to overtime. With her being so hot, I felt very confident running a play for her. She was a little off-balance, but we executed the play down the stretch, and when it left her hands, I thought it had a chance of going in."
"Carin is tremendous offensively. She dominates practice, offensively, at times, and her defense continues to improve. She can get on rolls like that, and it is fun to watch. You almost want to just sit back, and run every play through her. Ali Mann played injured tonight, Liz Honegger was strapped with foul trouble and played only seven minutes in the first half, but you got a glimpse of another freshman that has a very bright future. She's fun to watch, that's for sure, and she kept us in the game when we could not get anything else going."
"They (Ball State) are defending MAC West Division co-champions, and have been to two MAC Tournament Championships (in the last two years). This is a barometer for us, after losing by nearly 30 points in our first game against them (two years ago), and by 25 points in last year's first meeting. In our first couple years, they had dominant talent. Now, we have a team that we can put out there and feel good about matching their talent. But, we have to find ways to win close MAC games. They expect to win those games, and sometimes we look around and hope to win those. And, I think that's a big difference with teams that have been champions."
BGSU FRESHMAN CARIN HORNE
"It is a team effort. My teammates gave me the courage and the confidence. I felt energy from the bench, my teammates, the coaching staff and the crowd. I just kept trying to make plays, stay focused, and do what the coaches told me."
(Did you know you were a point away from the school single-game scoring record?)
"No. I just try to give it all, every minute I'm out there."
BALL STATE COACH TRACY ROLLER
(On Carin Horne)
"Boy, she was on fire. We could not stop her at all. She was in the proverbial zone, and we tried several different people on her. But, she was taking it off the dribble, she was getting to the line, hitting free throws, hitting threes. She was unbelieveable tonight."
"Kate (Endress) has been the go-to player for us all year. We'd been running a couple different plays; in the last two possessions, I switched it up, and just put Kate in the middle of the floor, hoping she'd get a good look or get a foul and get to the line. She's such a competitor that I feel very confident having the ball in her hands."
"You had two tough teams that had two great non-conference (seasons). Curt's doing such a great job, and his recruiting class -- I don't know who to pick for freshman of the year; they may all be on this team. He's recruited well and turned the program around."
