Jakupcin Wins Back-Draw Singles Final at U-M

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University tennis team closed out action in the Wolverine Invitational Sunday afternoon (Oct. 3). Team scores were not kept at the three-day, seven-team invite, hosted by the University of Michigan.
The Falcons' Sunday action was highlighted by a victory from sophomore Ashley Jakupcin at the Blue Flight. Jakupcin swept Western Michigan's Carrie Jeanmaire to win the back draw of her flight. After opening tourney play with a loss, Jakupcin reeled off three-straight wins.
BGSU junior Andrea Meister's run in the Wolverine Flight came to an end with a loss to Marquette's Callan Smith in the final. That snapped Meister's singles win streak at three matches.
A pair of Falcon freshmen lost in the back-draw finals of their respective flights. In the Maize Flight, Andrea Volle fell to WMU's Pryanka Parekh, losing by a narrow 14-12 score in the third-set 'super tiebreaker.' Jenna Nussbaum lost to Marquette's Elisabeth Dokter, also in a third set, by a 10-6 score in the Wolverine Flight.
Senior Cameron Benjamin wrapped up third place in the Wolverine Flight with a convincing win over Xavier's Annie Diedalis, 6-0, 6-2. Also at that flight, classmate Laura Kokinda closed her weekend with a singles win, while junior Heidi Romer won her Sunday match in the Maize Flight.
In doubles play, the Meister/Nussbaum team lost in the consolation final on Sunday. The duo of Romer and senior Susie Schoenberger ended their weekend with a victory.
The Falcons open the dual-match portion of the 2004-05 schedule with a Thursday (Oct. 7) match vs. Wayne State University. That match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. at BGSU's Keefe Courts.
