CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University's Ali Mann has been named to the Mid-American Conference's preseason all-conference women's basketball team, the league office announced Thursday afternoon (Oct. 7). The team is a result of voting by members of the MAC News Media Association.
For the third consecutive season, the preseason all-league team consists of five student-athletes from each of the MAC's two divisions. Due to a tie in the voting, this year's West Division team consists of six players.
Mann, the reigning MAC Freshman of the Year, is one of just three sophomores named to the team.
The preseason all-MAC East Division team consists of Kent State's Lindsay Shearer and Malika Willoughby, Marshall's Sikeetha Shepard-Hall and Miami's Amanda Jackson and Cindi Merrill.
Joining Mann on the West Division team are Ball State's Kate Endress, Eastern Michigan's Ryan Coleman and Nikki Knapp and Western Michigan's Carrie Moore and Casey Rost.
Last winter, Mann helped the Falcons to a 21-10 overall record and a MAC mark of 11-5. BGSU, picked to finish sixth in the West, actually finished in a second-place tie, just a game out of first, and advanced to the championship game of the Kraft MAC Tournament.
A native of Chelsea, Mich., Mann earned honorable mention on the 2003-04 All-MAC Team, and also was named to the MAC's All-Tournament Team. She averaged 12.9 points and a team-high 7.9 rebounds last season. Her total of 400 points was the second-most by a freshman in school history, while her total of 245 rebounds was a Falcon freshman record.
I am very pleased that Ali was chosen to the preseason team, and that the media recognized the outstanding freshman campaign that she had," said Falcon head coach Curt Miller. "I look for her to have another outstanding season and continue to make her mark on the BGSU career record charts."
The Brown and Orange will play a home exhibition game on Monday, Nov. 8, before opening the regular season with a Nov. 12 game at Ohio State. That game is a first-round contest in the Preseason WNIT.
Mann and Miller, along with the other members of the preseason All-MAC team and the rest of the league's women's basketball head coaches, will be available for interview at the conference's Basketball Media Day, which is slated for Wednesday, Oct. 20 in Cleveland.
