Bowling Green, Ohio - Wayne State enacted revenge on Bowling Green for a 7-3 thumping on Thursday night with a 9-3 victory at the BGSU Ice Arena on Saturday night over the Falcons. Adam Krug had a hat-trick for the Warriors, who scored four goals in the first period, two in the second period, and three in the third period.
"It was definitely a game where we made mistakes and Wayne State capitalize on them," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "Our turnovers were so costly. They did a good job of finishing chances."
Krug got the scoring going at 2:01 of the first period and Mark Nesbus followed just 53 seconds later for a quick 2-0 WSU lead. Steve Kovalchik and Stavros Paskaris added tallies for a 4-0 lead at the first intermission. BGSU's Jordan Sigalet registered just five saves on nine shots faced in the opening period and did not play the remainder of the game.
Junior Jon Horrell saw his first action as a Falcon to begin the second period between the pipes. Freshman Jonathan Matsumoto gave BGSU life at 4:29 of the second period with a PPG, his team-leading seventh goal of the year, to cut the deficit to three. Jonathan Sigalet and Brett Pilkington assisted. However, WSU rattled off two unanswered goals to build its lead back to 6-1. Sophomore Rich Meloche ended the scoring in the second period with his fifth goal of the season, fourth PPG, at 19:38 for a 6-2 Warrior verdict at the second intermission.
WSU added three more in the third period before BGSU freshman Ben Geelan tallied his third goal of the year for the final 9-3 score. BGSU held a 37-25 shot advantage in the game, but WSU ended with three PPGs, two SHGs, and goalie Matt Kelly stopping 34 shots. Horrell finished with nine saves and five goals allowed in 33:07 of action with junior Bob Frazee stopping two shots in the final 6:53 of the game.
WSU had 16 penalties with 32 PIM while BGSU had 13 penalties for 45 PIM. WSU was 3-for-6 on the power play and BGSU was 2-for-11.
WSU improves to 7-4-1 overall while BGSU is now 6-3-1. The Falcons return to Central Collegiate Hockey Association action next weekend when they host in-state foe Miami for two games at the BGSU Ice Arena (Nov. 26-27) at 7:05 p.m. each night.
