Bowling Green, Ohio - Sophomore Dana Hanson scored his first career goal at 8:10 of the third period and freshman Alex Foster added an insurance goal with 3:39 left to help Bowling Green defeat visiting Notre Dame, 3-1, at the BGSU Ice Arena Thursday night.
Hanson's power-play goal was the first point in 37 games as a Falcon, with assists from Foster and Michael Hodgson. Foster's goal was assisted by fellow freshmen John Mazzei and Ben Geelan.
"I thought it was a game very similar to the last three hockey games where we came out with a great deal of energy," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "Jordan (Sigalet) was able to make a lot of key saves in the second period and gave us an opportunity to catch our legs in the third period and play a spirited third period.
"This is a team (Notre Dame) we're going to play three more times. It's team we want to try and keep ourselves ahead of for the entire season, so it's a big two points and we want to protect our home ice. It's nice when you can get contributions from a lot of different players and we had that tonight."
The Falcons came out strong and outshot the Irish 17-9 in the opening period. Freshman Derek Whitmore put the Falcons on the board with a PPG at 6:50 of the first period, 1-0, with assists from Mazzei and Rich Meloche.
Notre Dame's Mark Van Guilder knotted the game at 8:54 of the second period with an assist from Cory McLean. However, that would be the only goal Jordan Sigalet would allow by the Irish. Sigalet ended with 30 saves on 31 shots faced to earn first-star honors.
"I actually just came off the bench," Hanson said about his goal. "The goalie was just kind of scambling to get back in his net, I saw the open net and fired it on net. It was kind of a bad angle but I was lucky it went in."
BGSU freshmen accounted for seven of the nine points tallied on the night with Mazzei (two assists) and Foster (goal, assist) accounting for two apiece.
The Falcons improve to 4-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Notre Dame falls to 1-5-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the CCHA. It marks the first time since the fall of 1999 that BGSU is above .500 in the CCHA. That season the Falcons started the year 3-1-0 in their first four league contests. Overall, it is the best start for BGSU since the Brown and Orange began the 1996-97 season 6-0-0.
BGSU had a 37-31 shot advantage for the game and were 2-for-8 on the power play. ND was 0-for-6 with the extra man.
BGSU now travels to South Bend for a Friday contest in the Joyce Center. Face-off is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
