East Lansing, Mich. - After a scoreless first period, visiting Bowling Green rattled off two power-play goals in the final two minutes of the second period and held on for a 2-1 victory over host Michigan State. The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Spartans in Munn Ice Arena by the Falcons, dating back to a 1-0 BGSU victory on Dec. 7, 1997.
Jonathan Sigalet tallied two power-play goals in a span of 38 seconds, the first coming at 18:23 and the second at 19:01 of the second period. Sigalet's first goal was set up by a backhand pass from James Unger from behind the net. Sigalet's wrister came from the right crease and snuck its way behind MSU goalie Dominic Vicari, with another assist to Don Morrison. The second goal was set up by Jonathan Matsumoto who won the face-off back to Sigalet. The sophomore then moved the puck to the point and fired a wrister that went low on Vicari.
MSU held the Falcons scoreless on their first five power plays before the back-to-back extra-man tallies.
The Spartans drew to within one goal at 10:58 of the third period with a power-play goal by Jim Slater. The puck trickled out of the glove of Jordan Sigalet and just beyond the goal line, while a small scrum ensued behind the net. After discussing the play with the goal judge, referee Dan Brown ruled it a goal.
BGSU killed off two power plays in the final five minutes of the game and withstood 1:10 minutes of an extra attacker when Vicari was pulled to pick up the victory. MSU held a 20-8 shot advantage in the third period alone, finishing with a 47-23 shot advantage for the game. Sigalet held strong, though, stopping 46 of the 47 shots faced and led a penalty kill unit that halted six of seven Spartan power plays.
Sigalet also stopped a penalty shot at 10:45 of the first period by Slater. The senior Spartan went glove side and hit Sigalet in the left shoulder on the attempt. It was Sigalet's third career penalty shot that he has faced at BGSU, stopping two of them.
BGSU improves to 8-3-2 overall and 5-2-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, good enough for third place in the league. MSU drops to 6-8-1 overall and 3-6-0 in the CCHA. The two teams conclude the weekend series at the BGSU Ice Arena on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
