MACON, Ga. - The Bowling Green State University softball team dropped its first game of the young season, with a 3-1 defeat to Marist College Saturday (Feb. 28). The game was the Falcons' third in the Comfort Inn Mercer Classic in Macon, Ga.
With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 1-2, while the Falcons drop to 2-1.
Falcon starter Lindsay Heimrich held Marist hitless through three innings, and the Falcons broke through in the top of the fourth, courtesy of a pair of seniors. Candice Fenton drove home Jenifer Kernahan with the game's first run.
In the bottom of the fourth, however, the Red Foxes scored twice, on Barbara Leasure's two-run double. Marist added a run on a fifth-inning homer by Chrystine McHugh.
For the Red Foxes, Liz Moyer picked up the win, with five innings of one-run, six-hit ball. Lyndsay Ward pitched two frames of one-hit shutout ball to earn the save.
Heimrich suffered the loss in her first decision of the season. The sophomore allowed only four hits in her five innings in the circle. Classmate Liz Vrabel pitched a one-two-three inning, striking out two batters.
The Falcons outhit the Red Foxes, 7-4, with sophomore Gina Rango doubling twice and Fenton once. Fenton, like Rango, had a pair of hits in the game. Kernahan, junior Kristen Anderson and senior Valerie Tipton each had one hit apiece. The Falcons, however, left eight runners on base to Marist's three.
BGSU was scheduled to return to the diamond later Saturday, taking on host Mercer in a 5:00 p.m. game.
