MACON, Ga. - The Bowling Green State University softball team battled host Mercer University through six scoreless innings, but the host Bears broke through in the seventh inning for a 3-0 win over the Falcons Saturday evening (Feb. 28). The game was the Falcons' fourth in the Comfort Inn Mercer Classic.
The win improved the Bears to 10-9 on the season, while the Falcons fell to 2-2.
Sophomore Liz Vrabel locked up in a pitchers' duel with MU's Katie Rosentreter. The Bears finally broke through for three runs in the seventh. After singles by Mercer's Crystal Pardue and Kristin Talamantes, C.J. Martin reached on catcher's interference to load the bases. Then, a wild pitch by Vrabel allowed a run, and a throwing error on the play let two more runners score.
Rosentreter (7-3) picked up the win, allowing two hits and striking out seven batters. Vrabel suffered her first loss of the year to drop to 1-1.
The Falcons close out the weekend with a Sunday (Feb. 29) game vs. Morehead State University.
