Omaha, Nebraska - Five goals in less than three minutes in the third period turned a 1-0 contest into a last-man-standing match. The end result was a 3-3 tie between visiting Bowling Green and host Nebraska-Omaha in the Qwest Center Omaha in front of 8,727.
"It was a real dead-even hockey game and a game that stayed relatively score-free for such a long time and then really opened up in the third period," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "
The two teams combined for five goals over 3:39 in the third period. UNO's Josh Weeks scored at 6:55 in the third period to knot the game at 1-1. Then, junior Alex Rogosheske won the draw in the Mavericks' zone, which senior Brian Escobedo picked up, drove to the net, and wristed a shot under the arm of UNO goalie Chris Holt for a 2-1 Falcon lead at 7:31
Sophomore Mike Falk then followed up a Bryan Dobek shot from the left circle that bounced in front of Holt for a 3-1 BGSU lead at 8:03. Dobek and Kevin Bieksa earned helpers on the goal.
After a UNO timeout, Maverick Ryan Bennett scored his first goal of the season 35 seconds later at 8:38 to cut BGSU's lead to one, 3-2. A Don Morrison penalty put UNO on the power play and Kaleb Betts capitalized at 9:34 to tie the game at 3-3.
The two teams played the rest of the way scoreless to give BGSU its school-record seventh tie of the season.
"I was really pleased with the way our team responded when they did tie it up," said Paluch. "It was a game of tremendous even flow.
"Mike Falk's return was terrific. He scored two goals, but he was a tremendous factor in the game. I thought he was playing his best hockey before he got hurt and he picked up right where he left off. I thought Jordan coming back from his injury played extremely well and didn't miss a beat."
BGSU struck first in the second period with a Mike Falk goal. After missing the last six games due to a shoulder injury, Falk took a feed from Ryan Minnabarriet from behind the net and wristed a shot past Holt for a 1-0 Falcon lead at 18:46 of the second period. It was just Falk's second goal of the season with his other coming at Minnesota-Duluth on Jan. 2.
A scoreless first period was predominantly controlled by BGSU, despite being outshot 12-7. Each team was 0-for-1 on the power play in the opening period, with BGSU attempting two shots and the Mavericks not even getting a shot attempt with the extra-man advantage. UNO, which had the sixth-best power play in the nation entering the game, finished 1-for-5 on the power play while BGSU was 0-for-4.
UNO held a 34-31 shot advantage in the game, despite BGSU holding the edge in the second period (11-9) and the third period (12-10). The Mavericks outshot the Falcons 3-1 in overtime.
Jordan Sigalet earned first-star honors with several key stops, finishing with 31 saves. Holt stopped 28 shots.
BGSU remains two points ahead of UNO in the league standings (14-12). The Falcons are now 7-13-7 overall and 5-10-4 in the CCHA. UNO stands at 6-16-5 overall and 4-13-4 in the league.
The two teams conclude their season series Saturday night in Omaha with faceoff scheduled for 9:05 p.m. EST.
