CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's basketball senior Lindsay Austin has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday (Feb. 9). Austin earns the honor for the first time this season and the second time in her Falcon career.
Austin, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, averaged 10.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 6.0 steals as the Falcons split a pair of games against the MAC's two divisional leaders last week.
Austin began the week by setting a school record with 10 steals in the Falcons' 92-81 loss at Miami Tuesday (Feb. 3). Then, she hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer, giving the Falcons a 69-67 win over Western Michigan Saturday afternoon (Feb. 7) at Anderson Arena.
In the Miami game, Austin had her fifth double-double of the season, with 13 points and the 10 steals. She also had seven rebounds and six assists (without a turnover) vs. the RedHawks.
Austin played only 25 minutes vs. WMU due to foul trouble, but still had seven points and six assists. With the game clock winding down, she drove and hit the game-winning 10-footer in the lane as the buzzer sounded.
On the week, Austin shot .529 from the field. On the season, she is averaging 10.2 points and 5.2 rebounds, and leads the team with 5.5 assists and 2.8 steals per game. Austin, the MAC's active career assists leader, with 447, ranks among BGSU's top-four in both career assists and steals (212).
Austin's honor marks the third time a Falcon player has been named MAC P-O-W this season. BGSU freshman Liz Honegger earned the award on both Dec. 15 and Jan. 5. Austin took West Division honors, while Miami's Amanda Jackson was this week's East Division recipient.
The Falcons (13-7, 6-3 MAC) of head coach Curt Miller hit the road for a pair of games this week. BGSU plays a Wednesday (Feb. 11) game at Ohio, before facing Central Michigan in a Valentine's Day game in Mt. Pleasant. The Ohio contest begins at 7:00 p.m., with the CMU game starting at 2:00 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on WBGU-FM (88.1).
