CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's basketball freshman Ali Mann has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday (March 1). Mann earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career.
Mann, a native of Chelsea, Mich., averaged 24.0 points and 7.5 rebounds and shot .577 from the field and .750 (6-of-8) from three-point range as the Falcons won a pair of road games last week. Mann had 20 points, a team-high eight rebounds and a season-best four steals in BGSU's 77-67 win at Marshall Wednesday (Feb. 25). Her 6-of-10 shooting night against the Thundering Herd included a 3-for-5 effort from three-point range.
On Sunday (Feb. 29), Mann had a game-high 28 points and added seven boards in an 84-79 overtime win at Ball State. She made nine field goals in 16 attempts, both season highs, vs. the Cardinals.
In that BSU game, Mann tied her season best with three three-pointers, a mark she had set four days earlier at MU. She was a perfect 3-for-3 from long range against the Cardinals.
On the season, Mann is now averaging 12.7 points and 7.8 rebounds, ranking second on the team in the former category and leading the Falcons in the latter. In MAC games, she has a team-high 14.8 points and 7.9 rebounds. Mann leads the Falcons in scoring in conference games, and is second in rebounding. She is shooting .496 from the floor and a MAC-leading .512 from long range in conference contests.
Mann's honor marks the fourth time a Falcon player has been named MAC P-O-W this season. BGSU freshman Liz Honegger earned the award on both Dec. 15 and Jan. 5, while senior Lindsay Austin was honored on Feb. 9. Mann took this week's West Division honors, while Miami's Cindi Merrill was this week's East Division recipient.
The Falcons (17-9, 10-5 MAC) of head coach Curt Miller close the regular season with a Tuesday (March 2) game against the arch-rival University of Toledo. That game, which will mark "Senior Night" for Austin and classmate Stefanie Wenzel, will begin at 7:00 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena. BGSU has clinched a home game for the first round of the Kraft MAC Tournament, and will face either Akron or Central Michigan on Saturday (March 6) at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on WBGU-FM (88.1).
