LONG BEACH, Calif. - Bowling Green State University women's basketball senior Stefanie Wenzel has been named an Academic All-American. Wenzel was one of just five student-athletes named to the Academic All-America Women's Basketball University Division First Team presented by CoSIDA, it was announced Thursday (March 4).
Wenzel, a native of Sussex, Wis. (Hartland Arrowhead H.S.), becomes only the fifth Falcon to earn Academic All-America honors, and only the third women's basketball student-athlete in school history named to the first team.
Wenzel is joined on the first team by another Mid-American Conference student-athlete, Ball State's Kate Endress. Kansas State's Laurie Koehn, Penn State's Kelly Mazzante and Harvard's Hana Peljto round out the first-team selections. Mazzante was selected as the 2004 Academic All-American of the Year.
On Feb. 19, Wenzel was named to the Academic All-District IV First Team, after earning all-district second-team honors as a junior. As a first-team selection in 2004, Wenzel automatically had her name placed on the Academic All-America ballot.
To be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, a starter or important reserve, and must carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher (on a 4.0 scale).
Wenzel was one of four MAC student-athletes named to the teams. In addition to BSU's Endress on the first team, Miami's Colleen Day was a second-team pick, while Kent State's Lindsay Shearer was named to the third team.
At the time of nomination, Wenzel maintained a 3.97 cumulative GPA as an integrated language arts major.
On the court, Wenzel leads the Falcons with 15.1 points per game, and has scored in double digits in 24 of BGSU's 27 games this season, including in each of the last 10 contests.
A team co-captain who has started every game, Wenzel has scored a career total of 1,052 points, including 1,016 (12.2 ppg) over the past two-plus seasons.

Wenzel has been named the MAC's Scholar-Athlete of the Week twice this season to date.
Wenzel is the first Falcon to earn Academic All-America accolades since Jacki Raterman in 1999, and joins Stephanie Coe (1987) and Talita Scott (1994) as the only first-team selections in school history.
The Falcons are 18-9 overall, and finished the MAC regular-season schedule with a league mark of 11-5. Both records reflect six-win improvements over last season (12-16, 5-11 MAC). The Falcons of third-year head coach Curt Miller, seeded fourth for the 13-team Kraft MAC Tournament, host Central Michigan in a first-round game Saturday (March 6). Tipoff is 1:00 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena.
