Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green broke open a one-run game with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat visiting Wayne State in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday afternoon, 11-7, at Warren Steller Field.
An RBI single by Andy Hudak and a throwing error by the WSU third baseman scored two runs, while Jeff Warnock brought home Hudak from third on a sacrifice bunt for a four-run lead entering the ninth inning.
Neil Schmitz, who had come in during the top of the eighth inning, preserved the victory for the Falcons to pick up his third save of the season. He holds the all-time saves record at BGSU with 13. Schmitz pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit or run while walking one and striking out four.
The Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI-double by Steve Raszka and a two-run single by Josh Dietz. Wayne State came back with a run in the second inning and two more in the third inning to knot the game at 3-3.
BGSU regained the lead off another RBI-hit from Raszka (single) in the fifth inning, scoring Dash Yost, for a 4-3 advantage. WSU again tied the score with a run in the top of the sixth inning before the Falcons plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Hudak drove in two on a bases-loaded single, scoring Eric Lawson and Josh Stewart. Then Warnock doubled to right-center field, scoring Jimmy Lipari and Hudak, for a 8-4 Falcon lead.
WSU cut the lead to 8-7 with two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth before BGSU's three-run eighth inning for the final 11-7 edge.
Matt Hundley (2-0) picked up his second win of the season after entering in the sixth inning. Greg Becker started for the Falcons, lasting 3.1 innings while freshman Adam Gumpf allowed just one run in 2.1 innings of work.
Joel Whitbeck (0-3) suffered the loss for the Warriors. Three Falcons ended with multiple hits, including Yost (2-for-3), Raszka (2-for-3), and Hudak (3-for-5). Hudak and Warnock each drove in three runs.
BGSU ended with 13 hits, the third-straight game that the Falcons have recorded a double-digit hit total.
The Falcons improve to 13-6 overall while WSU drops to 10-14 overall. BGSU is back home at Warren Steller Field tomorrow, Wednesday, for a non-conference game against Detroit-Mercy. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
