Bowling Green, Ohio - Marquette University won the 4th annual John Piper Intercollegiate with a tournament record score of 852 for 54 holes. The 12-under par score bested Eastern Michigan's 856 set in 2002. The Piper Intercollegiate was hosted by Bowling Green State University at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, Ohio.
The Golden Eagles shot a 281 and 288 on Monday, and followed that performance up with a 283 on Tuesday to stay ahead of second-place Ohio. The Bobcats ended 11 strokes back of Marquette with a 54-hole score of one-under, 863.
Chris Shuford of Longwood University was the individual medalist with a three-round score of 208, including a 69 on the final day. BGSU's Craig Pickerel (72-69-69) and Marquette's Joe Weber finished tied for second place with a score of 210. Marquette freshman Ted Gray shot a tournament low and competitive course record of 65 in the first round on Monday, finishing tied for fourth place with a score of 213.
The Falcons had two teams competing in the tournament with its "A" team finishing sixth (295-293-297--885) and its "B" team placing eighth (296-297-298--891). Besides Pickerel finishing tied for second place, junior Chris Leake finished tied for 10th with a score of 216 (68-74-74) and sophomore Brad Dearsman finished tied for 15th with a score of 219 (72-74-73).
"Craig played great," said BGSU Coach Garry Winger. "He had a chance to win this tournament. On Monday he was at six-under through 12 holes, but then bogeyed three of his final six holes.
"I'm disappointed in sixth, but our B Team finished eighth, which tells us that we have some depth, which is a good problem to have. Nobody was going to catch Marquette."
Other Falcons competing included junior Heath Ziglar (T-34th, 225), freshman Trevor Spathelf (T-38th, 226), Adam Cordes (T-46, 228), freshman Jace Walker (T-48th, 229), sophomore Dan McIntyre (T-48th, 229), freshman Russell Goodwin (T-66th, 235), and junior Tommy Lopez (T-70th, 236). Freshman Michael Bibler competed as an individual and finished tied for 61st (234).
The Falcons don't get much rest as they now prepare to travel north this weekend to the Northern Intercollegiate Golf Invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin at University Ridge Golf Course. The 54-hole tournament runs Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 18-19.
