BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis team begins the 2004-05 season this weekend, hosting the BGSU Invitational. The two-day, five-team event will be held Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 25-26) at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus.
Keefe Courts are located off Stadium Drive, directly east of (behind) the BGSU Ice Arena and west of the Cochrane Soccer Stadium complex.
Head coach Penny Dean enters her 15th season at the BGSU helm. She and the Falcons will host a tourney field that includes Buffalo, Ferris State, Indiana State and Xavier. Team scores will not be kept, but individual singles and doubles flight champions will be crowned.
Dean lost three seniors (Gaby Coello, Jessica Johnson and Lisa Maloney) off of last year's squad, but welcomes back seven letterwinners who are joined by a pair of freshmen.
The 2004-05 senior class includes Cameron Benjamin, Laura Kokinda and Susie Schoenberger. They are joined by two juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen.
Andrea Meister and Heidi Romer comprise the junior class, while Ashley Jakupcin and Erica Wolfe enter their sophomore seasons. Freshmen Jenna Nussbaum (Glenview, Ill.) and Andrea Volle (Cincinnati, Ohio) will make their respective collegiate debuts this weekend.
The format for this year's BGSU Invitational differs slightly from seasons past. There will be six singles flights and three doubles flights, as in previous years. But, each flight will be divided into a Brown group and an Orange group, with three players/teams in each group. The first stage of the invite will be a round-robin format, with each player/team playing the other two players/teams in their group.
Following the round-robin portion, the winners of each group will meet in the playoff round (first-place match), with the second-place finishers (third-place match) and third-place finishers (fifth-place finishers) meeting.
The complete list of matchups can be found in the pdf version of this release.
