BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis team had a successful first day of the 2004-05 season, as the Falcons hosted the BGSU Invitational Saturday (Sept. 25) at Keefe Courts. The two-day, five-team tourney concludes on Sunday.
No team scores are kept in the event, but a total of four BGSU singles players and two Falcon doubles teams advanced to the championship match of their respective flights.
Senior Susie Schoenberger (flight #1), sophomore Ashley Jakupcin (#2), freshman Jenna Nussbaum (#5) and senior Laura Kokinda (#6) all qualified for the first-place match in singles action. In doubles play, the team of Jakupcin and senior Cameron Benjamin advanced to the final at the second flight, while Kokinda and junior Andrea Meister are through to the final at the third flight.
The Falcons are joined by Buffalo, Ferris State, Indiana State and Xavier in the tournament. Each flight was divided into two groups (Brown and Orange) of three players or teams each. After round-robin play, the winners of each group advance to the first-place match, while the runners-up advance to the third-place match. The third-place finishers in each group meet in the fifth-place match.
At the top singles flight, Schoenberger advanced to the first-place match, and will face UB's Andreea Novaceanu. All three players in Schoenberger's group finished with identical 1-1 records, but Schoenberger earned the number-one spot and the berth in the first-place match by virtue of the second tiebreaker, fewest games lost in her round-robin matches.
In the second flight, Jakupcin went 2-0 to advance to the championship. She downed ISU's Magda Narczewska and UB's Kristen Ortman to win the Orange group, and will meet XU's Stephanie Bauer on Sunday.
Also in that flight, junior Heidi Romer went 1-1 in round-robin play to place second. She will face Narczewska in Sunday's third-place match.
Freshman Andrea Volle made her collegiate debut Saturday, and topped UB's Tina Jacobs in straight sets in her first-ever singles match as a Falcon. Volle finished 1-1 to advance to the third-place match against ISU's Marie Caujolle.
Both Benjamin and Meister split their two matches at the fourth flight. They are scheduled to meet in Sunday's third-place match.
The Falcons' other freshman, Nussbaum, joined Volle with a win in her opening collegiate match, downing XU's Sarah Potts in straight sets. Nussbaum then went on to sweep UB's Jamie Jackson, losing only one game in the process. She will meet XU's Jackie Vilines for the flight championship on Sunday.
Sophomore Erica Wolfe also competed at the fifth flight, dropping her Saturday matches. Wolfe will meet Jackson in the fifth-place match.
At the sixth flight, Kokinda had a solid start to her season after missing most of last year due to injury. Kokinda swept XU's Katie Lohner and ISU's Imane Lahlou, losing a total of only nine games in the process. She will meet Xavier's Alicia Papa for the flight title Sunday.
In doubles play, not all of the round-robin action was completed on Saturday. At the top flight, the team of Romer and Schoenberger fell to a Ferris State duo, but the Falcon tandem still has one match to play before the playoff round begins.
At the second flight, the Jakupcin/Benjamin duo is through to the final after a 2-0 record on Saturday. That Falcon team will face Buffalo's Novaceanu/Jacobs duo in the first-place match.
Also at that flight, the two frosh competed as a team. Nussbaum and Volle dropped their opening match, and still have one round-robin match to play before the playoff round.
Kokinda and Meister won their group at the third flight, advancing to the first-place match against an opponent to be determined. Wolfe, teaming with XU's Potts in the other third-flight group, was victorious in the first match. That duo still has a round-robin match to play on Sunday.
Sunday's action begins at 9:00 a.m. at Keefe Courts. The complete results from Saturday, as well as Sunday's matchups, can be found by clicking on the pdf link at the top of this page.
