The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will welcome Cleveland State to Anderson Arena Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. to open the home portion of the 2004 season. Following the match with CSU, the Falcons will once again hit the road for back-to-back tournaments, hosted by West Virginia (Sept. 11-12) and Wright State (Sept. 17-18).
Recap Of NU Invite
Before this past weekend, the last time the Falcons entered a tournament and not walked away with at least one win was back in 1996, when BGSU lost to Tennessee, Virginia and Pittsburgh (Aug 31-Sept. 1).
In fact, those three loses in 1996, were also the last time the Brown & Orange opened a season at 0-3.
Freshman Stephanie Swiger began her Falcon career with an impressive showing, leading the Falcons with 27 kills and a .510 hitting percentage through the weekend. She also posted 14 digs and was second on the team with seven block assists.
BCSN To Broadcast Wednesday Night's Action
A local TV affiliate, BCSN, will be broadcasting Wednesday night's match versus Cleveland State, starting at 7:00 p.m.
A Look At The Vikings
Cleveland State, much like the Falcons, were set to make a trip to Florida last weekend, but were forced to cancel their trip down south, due to Hurricane Frances. Unlike the Falcons, CSU did look to make up for lost time, and took the weekend off.
CSU (1-0) is coming off a five-set victory (30-28, 28-30, 27-30, 30-25 and 15-11) over Kent State back on September 1. The Vikings were led by Nicole Kennedy (14 kills), Jenna Maddocks (13 kills) and Danielle Siefker (11 kills). Both Kennedy (11) and Siefker (10) posted double-figure blocks as well.
Cleveland State leads the overall series at 14-12 and defeated the Falcons in four sets last seas
on.
Van De Walle Heads For Greece
Following Wednesday night's match with the Vikings, the BGSU Volleyball program will be without their head coach for the first time in over 22 years. Denise Van De Walle will be traveling to Greece, where she will be coaching the the National Sitting Volleyball Team in the Paralympics during the month of September. Van De Walle will miss a total of nine matches, and will not return until the Miami match on October 1.
