Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green scored six goals for the second night in a row to record a two-game sweep of visiting Alaska Fairbanks, winning Saturday at the BGSU Ice Arena, 6-1. It was the second two-game sweep of the season for the Falcons and the first Central Collegiate Hockey Association sweep since Jan. 10-11, 2003, vs. Northern Michigan (3-2 and 5-3).
For the second night in a row, four different Falcons tallied multiple points, including freshman Derek Whitmore (two goals) and sophomore Rich Meloche (two goals). Freshman Jonathan Matsumoto and junior Brett Pilkington had two assists each.
"I thought it was a lot more evenly played game, a tighter game, than the score indicated," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "We had some fortuitous bounces that went in our direction and we were pretty good at putting pucks in the net when we had chances to. Siggy was solid when he needed to be in net.
"We're fortunate that scoring has been spread out, but our overall contributions to our team have been spread out amongst a lot of guys. We have a lot of hockey players that are giving us quality minutes and quality time on the season."
Foster struck first at 13:27 of the first period with assists from Matsumoto and Chris Pedota, and BGSU took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. BGSU held a 10-3 shot advantage in the opening period.
BGSU flexed its muscles in the second period, getting three goals from Whitmore (12:25), Alex Rogosheske (15:26), and Meloche (17:40). Meloche then netted a power-play goal at 9:54 of the third period while Whitmore added a PPG at 10:32.
SR Jordan Sigalet's shutout bid came up 11 seconds short when UAF's Ryan McLeod scored at 19:49 with a slapshot and traffic in front of the net. Scott Vockeroth assisted.
BGSU ended with a 35-27 shot advantage, the fourth-straight game that the Falcons have registered 35 or more shots on net (2-1-1 in that time). The Falcons were 2-for-7 on the power play while UAF was 0-for-8.
The Falcons improved to 10-7-3 overall and 7-5-2 in the CCHA. The 16 league points place BGSU in a tie with Northern Michigan for fourth place in the CCHA, one point behind Nebraska-Omaha and five points behind second-place Ohio State. Michigan is in first place with 26 points.
This is the fastest that BGSU has reached 10 wins in 20 games or less since 1995 when the Falcons started 10-2-1.
BGSU is off next weekend before travelling to Northern Michigan for a key CCHA series, Jan. 21-22, in Marquette, Mich. Both games are scheduled for 7:35 pm. and can be heard on 88.1 FM, WBGU.
