BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hockey team, by a score of 9-6 fell to #4 Boston College Saturday night inside the Ice Arena. In the loss, sophomore Jonathan Matsumoto became the first Falcon to record a hat trick since 2004, when D-Arcy McConvey scored three times versus Minnesota-Duluth.
"We played a pretty good hockey game against a a pretty good team, said head coach Scott Paluch. "We had a lot of chances. Our power play kept answering the bell when we needed it, and for the most part our penalty kill did a good job for us against a good power-play team."
"I am disappointed that out club is 0-2 right now, but I feel good about this team."
The Falcons spotted the Eagles and early 2-0 lead with goals by Chris Collins and Pat Gannon in the opening two minutes and 15 seconds of the game. BGSU responded nicely, placing two goals behind the BC net-minder with the help of sophomores Jonathan Matsumoto and Derek Whitmore.
Boston College got the next four goals including three in the first ten minutes of the second period to spot BC a 6-2 advantage, but two more goals by Matsumoto, as well as a goal by Rich Meloche, which he deflected directly beneath the BC goaltender's pads, got the Falcons to within one at 6-5 at the end of the second stanza.
"I was extremely proud when we got it back to 6-6, and we showed a lot on who we are," said Paluch.
The Bowling Green comeback continued as senior Mike Falk connected on the Falcons fifth power-play goal of the night with the help of a beautiful pass through the crease from senior Brett Pilkington.
Following the goal, BC called a timeout and went on to record the game's final three goals to give the Eagles a 9-6 victory.
For the night 13 different Falcons recorded points, including Matsumoto's three points, and Pilkington and sophomore Alex Foster picking up two assists a piece.
BGSU out-shot BC 34-33, while the Falcons finished 5-for-12 on the power play, with the Eagles converting on 2-of-9 power play opportunities.
Up next for the Orange and Brown will be a Thursday night contest with the Buckeyes from Ohio State (Oct. 20) inside the Ice Arena. The following night Bowling Green will make the trip to Columbus, Ohio. Both contests begin at 7:05.
