EAST LANSING, Mich. - Bowling Green State University tennis senior Heidi Romer has advanced to the main draw of the singles competition at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships. The tournament, hosted by Michigan State University, runs through Tuesday (Oct. 25) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
Romer's 3-0 record in singles play highlighted a successful first two days for the Falcons. She began play in the 64-player qualifying draw with Thursday's defeat of IPFW's Lisa Bartelheim (6-4, 6-3), then topped UW-Green Bay's Jennifer Tan (6-2, 6-0) and Ball State's Stephanie Farrar (7-6, 7-6) to move into the final eight of the qualifying draw. Those remaining eight players advance to the main draw, which begins Saturday (Oct. 22). A total of 56 other players were placed in the main draw to start the tournament.
On Saturday, Romer is scheduled to face Indiana's Dora Vastag, the tournament's 10th-seeded player. BGSU will have two competitors in the main draw, as junior Ashley Jakupcin will begin her singles play at the ITA with a matchup against Detroit's Annie Moore.
Sophomore Jenna Nussbaum came within one match of making the main singles draw. Nussbaum, who had defeated a pair of Big Ten players, finally fell in her third match against an athlete from that conference.
Nussbaum had downed Michigan State's Marianne Eelens (6-4, 6-0) to open Thursday play, and followed that performance with a come-from-behind win over Ohio State's Angela DiPastina (3-6, 6-0, 6-1), losing just one game over the final two sets. On Friday, however, Nussbaum lost to Purdue's Mallory Voelker (6-2, 6-3).
Senior Andrea Meister, like her two teammates, opened qualifying-draw play with a win, topping Toledo's Jenny Belsky (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) on Thursday. But, Meister was downed by Sigrid Fischer (6-2, 6-1) in her second match.
Both Fischer and Voelker, the players that knocked the two Falcons out of the qualifying draw, advanced to the main singles draw.
In addition to the final singles matches in the qualifying draw, Friday also featured the first two rounds of the doubles main draw in East Lansing. Again, all BGSU competitors advanced to the second round, and one doubles team remains alive.
Nussbaum teamed with Ashley Jakupcin to post a pair of wins and advance to the round of 16. The BG duo opened play with a win over the Indiana State taem of Migan/Schickerling (8-4), then topped Ball State's Thompson/Calderwood tandem (8-6). That puts the Falcon team into a Saturday match with Northwestern's Cristelle Grier and Alexis Proussis, the top-seeded duo in the entire tournament.
The team of senior co-captains Meister and Romer won by default over the Illinois duo of Cuadra and Dave', before suffering an 8-3 loss to Notre Dame's Connelly/Stastny duo.
The Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships will continue on Saturday, with doubles play at 9:00 a.m. and the singles main draw beginning at 10:00 a.m.
